Haven’t posted here in a while, but todays find has blown my mind and I wanted to share it.
Today I was digging an old oyster shell road near downtown that has been recently disturbed by construction.
Last week I found a 1845 LC and a 1853 half dime at this location.
Decided to go back and made one of my best finds ever.
1852 10 dollar California gold rush era, gold coin.
In…. Wait for it….
South Mississippi.
I never knew this variation existed.
First I thought bottle cap. Then I saw the writing and I thought car wash token, or arcade token. Then flipped it over and saw the eagle. OMG ten dollar gold. Still can't believe it.
Likely dropped by a wealthy New Orleanian who vacationed here during the summer.

Totally awesome find if genuine (I really hope it is), even if not it is banner worthy.
Period Counterfeits or really super rare finds.

Somethings, like the lettering on reverse is somewhat crude. Compare it to a genuine example. Look closely at the G in gold, the 5 in the date and the alignment lettering to a genuine one on coinfacts at www.pcgs.com. Also, the dentils or the reverse, none I could see from the photo. It really should be examined by an expert in California gold. A genuine example is likely worth a fair amount of money (possible in the thousands), and even a period counterfeits sometimes also have good value.

Note: I been detecting for 50 + years. I have never dug a counterfeit or gold coin and I have dug up in the high hundreds of thousands of coins(no exaggeration and I hate to think how many holes whew), possibly more. I'm still trying for that gold coin.
That should how rare either one is.... or possibly how unlucky I'm...

That find will be hard to top in 2024!! Those coins were minted on Moffat & Co machinery under authority of The US Assay Office. My RedBook shows a different version of that coin. Several differences from one shown in book. Maybe different die sets? Your coin needs to go to PCGS or NCG for sure for authentication.

I agree. It is amazing how good fake coins can be made with today's technology. Get it authenticated to know for sure....But it looks fantastic and either way is a banner pull!
