looks like a decorative piece for the mouth of a scabbard.... probably not, but that would be my first thought.....

Thanks never would have put that together myself but makes perfect sense when yall point it out. Also the pic with ruler is back side of piece. Thanks again for yall help.

Could be an old Cloak Pin.

The fabric would be pushed through the oval opening and a pin pushed though the fabric from the inside of the cloak to hold it in place. The pin would not be fixed to the holder.

Here's an old Northern European similar pin from eBay - this one is circular, but you can see the principle :-

It is quite common to see them without the pin. When they became detached the pin would often stay inside the cloak while the brooch itself would fall off and be lost.


Something else to research, anyway.
