Norton ran out and I downloaded Avast and it blocks email and internet. Are there any other anti virus programs out there that are free. Any help from the pros is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Only blocks the bad stuff. Use Avast, and have since about 2002. It just plain works, but it does not like the spyware program "Incredimail". Never has blocked a safe email in all that time, either through Eudora, Outlook, or any online email program.

Incredimail alters the headers in your email to facilitate information gathering as in "forward" and "reply" options. If you're using Incredimail, the emails are being blocked because you and your email buddies are being tracked and your traffic examined and your emails tagged so that everyone gets their fair share of spam. If you are not seeing an increase in spam, thank your ISP for being diligent in blocking it so you don't have to see it.

Smee, Would like to use Avast, but when loaded neither explorer or email would work. Went in and changedLAN settings according to them and it made no difference. I can usually figure this stuff out but have spent a 2 hours playing with it. Thanks

Better off to use Firefox (and Thunderbird if you really need a special email program) anyway.

Be sure to go through the fix for SYMTDI errors (including BSOD) if/when you remove Norton. I would never recommend Norton after fixing several of these SYMTDI.SYS crashes over the last year+ for others. This one is almost as bad as the AGPCPQ XP/2 update system killer. Seems the symptoms and severity are machine-dependent.

I also used Avast for several years and never had any trouble. :)
AVG is also nice.

AVG is the best - free way to go. I have used it for years and absolutely love it. It catches a lot of viruses and other infections. I download music through a popular shareware site and I run an AVG scan before I open any of the music files. The program will let me know if it's safe to proceed and open the file or if a virus pops up, it will warn me. It has many other wonderful applications. AVG can also be upgraded for a small fee. Just my two cents.

I use AVG also along with the free version of Zonealarm firewall. I haven't had any serious problems for about 3 years now.

Sorry you had issues with Avast. I currently have it running on 22 people's machines and not one of them has ever had an issue.

Glad you found something that works.
