Free stuff at a yard sale

Stopped by a yard sale, had a box that was marked free and had some small toys in it. After finding a couple of things of interest I asked how much and was told there free, everything is free. So I was getting all the toys, GI Joes, Barbies, Hot Wheels etc. An older couple came in and started to get what I could not get to. I tried to claim all toys were mine, kind of like staking a claim, did not work. Two against one. Any way what I passed up before I found out every thing was free, a used x box and a couple of beat up Bose speakers.
