Getting asked this one a lot lately, so here is the straight version based on what I have seen actually work.

Start with your state, because the rules are different everywhere. Most states will not let a buyer take a car without a title, period. A handful have an age cutoff where an older vehicle can change hands with a registration and a bill of sale, so check your DMV page before you call anyone. That one check saves a lot of wasted phone calls.

If the title is lost, getting a duplicate from the DMV is usually the fastest fix. In most states it costs very little and shows up in a couple of weeks. If there is still a loan on the car, get the lien release first, since no yard can process it cleanly while a lender still has a claim.

When the title is just gone and is not coming back, here is what actually works:

1. Try the duplicate title route first anyway. It solves most cases.
2. If your state allows it for older cars, bring your current registration, your photo ID, and a bill of sale that lists the VIN, the sale price, and both parties. Some yards will take that package.
3. Ask the buyer straight up what paperwork they accept. Legit buyers will tell you on the first call. If someone tells you to sign a blank title or skip the paperwork, walk away. That is how people end up liable for a car they no longer own.
4. Get quotes from two or three buyers. The first number is rarely the best one.
5. Confirm towing is free before the truck rolls, and get it in writing on the receipt.
6. Do not hand over the keys or sign anything until the payment is in your hand. Cash or certified check, counted on the spot.
7. After the sale, cancel the insurance and tell the DMV the car is sold. That closes out your liability.

One last tip: pull your plates and clean out the car before the tow truck shows up, and snap a photo of the VIN plate and the odometer for your own records.

Anyone here sold one without a title? Curious what your state required.
