Those are pretty neat, what's the years on them?

One is 1960 & the other is 1977.

definitely a pretty french coin. are these both 1 franc coins? the french 5 franc from 1960-69 was silver with .3221 toz of silver, the later 5 francs and 1 franc coins from 1960 onward are a cupronickel alloy like our nickels i believe.

I found these two French coins (Francs) in the reject tray today. It is amazing how close they resemble our Walkers. Do you think they liked the Walker design so much as to try to copy it without duplicating it exactly????

I think these are made of stainless steel.

Sweet!
I think it's the other way around- didn't they send us the statue of liberty?
Congrats!

Indeed, the designer of the WLH, Adolf Wineman (Look at the initials near where the mintmark is), lifted... I mean, paid homage, to the Franc's design. Still think ours is prettier than those surrender monkeys was though (j/k if any of you French hang out here, lol). :P

Yes, these are 1 Franc coins.

Believe thats right LJ. I think France designed and gave us the Statue Of Liberty. I'm for sure not the historian to tell you about it though.
Good Hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tim.....you nailed it. I did a little research and yes, the SOL was a gift from France so I guess they can make a coin similiar to our Walker.....ha!

You learn something everyday. I hope I am not the only one that didn't know this....lol.

Pasted this:
The Statue of Liberty (Liberty Uniting the World) or "Lady Liberty" is a large statue in the harbour of New York City. It was built in 1886 and given as a gift from France. A smaller copy is near Seine river in Paris. Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the Eiffel Tower, helped design it.

Gift from France my ass. The designer of the Statue of Liberty was a frenchman. He tried to sell her to every nation in Europe as a work of art. He kept lowering his price with no takers. He then got a bright idea and told us that he had designed the statue as a tribute to liberty and he wanted us to have it and would we please just pay the shipping?
We sprung for that deal and the amount he charged was three times the delivered asking price in france so he paid to ship it and installed it and ended up getting twice what he was asking for it.
I have been told that we were the laughingstock of Europe over that deal but have never cared enough to go searching for copies of the newspapers that were printed back then.
I don't want to be presumptive and assume that WE do anything BUT I love that grand old lady and am delighted that once again a slam against the people of the United States blew up in the faces of our enemies. It must have really gauled the naysayers when so many of their own people flocked to the lady and came to the united states and became fine upstanding americans. Not at all like the border crossers we get these days. siegfried schlagrule

I really don't care for the French that much, either but they did bankrupt their own country financing our American Revolution. The least we could do was take an extra statue off their hands.
Don't slam LJ, either - name suggests Cajun (French Canadian), roots! ;D
They do pretty well on the coin designs, too.

Phew.....sorry I posted these coins.....lol.

Relax SS....it sounds like your getting yourself all worked up......ha!

Pretty cool looking coins LJ. I get a lot of Canadian coins in my area. Every blue moon I get something different than Canadian.

A Walking Liberty is one of the most beautiful designs as far as I am concerned. I have known forever the history of the Statue of Liberty. If given the chance, go for a visit. It is an awesome feeling standing at the base of her and soaking in the history. And climbing to the observation deck in the crown is great. I know, been there down that.

And it all started innocently showing French coins. :D

Please supply a source for this story - sounds like an urban legend to me. We need more than "I have been told".

Got a couple or three with that obverse I found MDing in Europe years and years ago, but they're from the nineteen-teens/twenties. Seems they are silver, IF I remember correctly. They're somewhere in a box with other MD finds. I AIN'T gonna go hunt 'em up.....
