A rifle butt plate!

Consensus is that it's to a Pennsylvania long rifle musket, which is known for the sharp overhang.

Sure looks like one to me.

Beautiful.

Assume it is brass?

I guess it was kind of a silly question.

In any case, the long overhang is characteristic of Pennsylvania Rifles of the Lancaster area.

It looks pretty early to me, but I'm only familiar with early PA gunsmiths as a crossover with silversmiths, so don't count me as an expert.

Thanks for the info nonetheless!

Maybe it belonged to an early ancestor of the Rockefellers. Maybe it's gold. ;) LOL

I like it!

That is an excellent find. Best of luck identifying it.

Updated OP with the rest of my finds this morning.

cool old find

Added the finished pic, preservation complete, for all you who like seeing the cleaning & preservation progression.

The plate will be donated to the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Franconia, PA in mid-July when I come back from vacation.

Looks great. Good job on the cleaning and preserving.

Very nice find and the donation is an exceptional act!

That's really nice, good job preserving it:thumbsup:
