Just want to say thanks to everyone that helped with my first item and figured I give it a try with the second unknown item.

Found this item on the same wreck, it is made of brass, weighs about a pound, is 4.25 inches tall or long and is hollow.

Could it be the doohickie you tie your boat up to on top of the post by the dock? Or on the bow of the boat?

My wife thought that it might be a bed post top, but who knows what half this stuff is, I found way to much stuff on this wreck and none of it makes any sense. This site reminds me of a garbage pit, as the items are from one end of the spectrum to the other.

My standard question (one of two standards, actually) Is the hole threaded? If so, something was attached to it or it was attached to something. If not, it is probably all there was to it.

Is the top solid? Or does it also have a hole in it? It looks like it is solid.
It could be any number of things, but more information is needed. So, for now I would say Doohickie it is.

Maybe, but this thing is 4 1/4 inches long. So seems too long for either application.

mojjax, I like the idea, but this thing is hollow while most fireplace tools seem to be heavy/solid brass.

Still, we won't know unless we get more clues!!!

I'm positive it is a lamp shade finial. It screws onto the top of the harp to secure the lamp shade.

For the size, weight, and metal I want to withdraw doohickie and submit a bed post finial. But why in a boat?

silverswede, I think the area was described as a junk heap. So this thing may have nothing to do with a boat. Your idea seems very plausible. It will be interesting to learn what the thing really is. Stay tuned. LOL

Sheet guide from a sailboat? (the sheet being the line that is used to control a sails trim.)

Silverswede,

I believe you hit it on the head - Kudos ;D my friend.

All the items that I have shown are from the same ship wreck, coins, bottles, lead sinkers, serving platter and more. The reason I called it a junk pile is because the dates on the coins that I found next to the keel beams are close to 60 years apart. Mind you the beams in the keel are at least 18" across and 24" or more tall.

Based on the coins, it means that the wreck either happened in 1775 and was then cross containmated in 1834 when the Liberty coin in found fell in the water and then landed in the same part of the stern that I found the 8 reals in; or one of the crew had both coins in their possesion when the ship went down.

It has been a real hair puller for me as I've been trying to figure out just how old this site is, I also have two prong metal forks with wooden handles, one of the other members said that they look like pre colonial steelware, I have knives and parts of a large serving plater too. To see some of what I'm describing, pls see shipwrecks and Coins look for my name (DandyDon), posting dates are 31 Dec 06 Jan.

Again, I thank all of you for helping me sort this out.

Bedpost topper is my bet too....second bet is a finial
It seems a tad too large for a lamp finial and afireplace iron top would most likely have been cast brass.
Although, it is possible (cannot tell too much from the picture about the size) for it to have been a finial...

Brass beds where held together by threaded pieces of iron just about the size of that hole.
The iron would have rusted away long ago...
I've have restored many brass bed frames and this looks very much like a part of one.

Brass buffing, victorian lamp and lighting restoration, anything to do with brass...I did it for almost 20 years

(I boast ;) )

Thanks Alchemy ;D,

I think that pretty much seals the deal on this - bed post tops makes sense to me too.
Should I leave them in the rough condition there in or do I polish them up?

Don

Thanks

DandyDon, send them to Alchemy for buffing. :D

I'm sure someone will correct me, but I believe polishing old brass is OK in this instance.
