FRIDAY'S FINDS & CHEAP SILVER PURCHASED
Hey guys
yesterday was a really nice day here in NY so i went out to try and get some halves. my boxes at my reg. pick-up banks won't be in till Tuesday but i was able to get $280 in halves from 5 different banks and 1 peace dollar (1935)! my 2nd ever silver dollar in the wild. the halves produced 11 40%ers.
but the best part of this day was later. i went to that collectible store (they sell mostly comics, and action figures) that's been around for 30 years (so i've heard), to buy some 2x2 cardboard flips for dollars, and i always ask him if he got coins but he always shows me some over-priced commem's or proof clad quarter in a fancy holder. never bought a coin from him.
yesterday, i saw a peace dollar in his showcase. i asked how much it was - he says : "sixty". almost passed it but then i asked if i could see it, and he says sure. he hands it to me - it's a 1921! great condition too! didn't even bargain - took it for $60, these are worth $100 even in G - and that's dealer's prices.
so my next question is "do you have any other silver coins", and this time i add "any quarters, dimes, maybe halves..?" and he says "yes! i have some.." and brings out a HUGE blue folder with those 20 2x2 pockets pages, and before he opens it he says, and i quote (i remember exactly what he said cause it was one of the best sentences i've heard in a long time): "Listen, i have these for maybe 20 years, and the prices are the same. i've not changed the prices, but there will be no bargaining. whatever it says on it, that's my last price" . fair enough. i open the folder, and then run out of the store.....
to the ATM. withdrawing $1200 dollars cause i know i'm gnna buy everything he had.
i seriously could not believe it. dimes (roosevelt and merc's) priced mostly 60c / 75c to some BUs at $2. quarters from $2.50 up to $8 for semi keys or BUs. war nickels - 60c (only had 2). and the best of these - halves. 40%ers: $3-$4 (not the best deal maybe but still under melt), and 90% (no kenn's, just franklins and walkers) as low as $4, $5, $7, $7.50! going all the way to $12 and some were $20 and $30 but i picked only 2 that were key dates.. guy couldn't believe his eyes when i pulled out complete pages from the folder and set it aside to buy.. he tells me: "don't sell it now, put it aside and it'll be worth much more than $7 soon".. no --deleted--!
i saw a 1/2 reale coin there, very small (like a half dime coin) from 1742, does anyone know anything about this coin? he had 2, 1 for $25, 1 for $35.
anyway.. total take:
2 war nickels
41 silver dimes (merc's and rosies, no keys)
17 silver quarters (washington, common)
61 silver halves (23 walkers, including 1916-d ($30), 1917-d (on reverse, $20) (38 franklins, including 2x1955 at $4, 1 1950 FBL)
10 40% kennedys
1 1921 peace dollar (VF or a little better)
5 50-pack 2x2 cardboard flips
for $627
the guy at the store got excited, he offered me an nice set of commem's that had a quarter oz gold and 1 oz silver and another coin (bronze or copper i think) for a little under melt but i wanted to make sure it's authentic so didn't take it yet. will have to go back to him anyway, as he has some foreign silver coins (he said mostly German and Russian) that i didn't know how pure they were or how much it weighed. he said he also had a gold british coin (sovereign i assume..?) but he didn't have it in the store right now. will definitely go back to him.
-------------------
i sold almost everything (holding the keys and the peace dollar, and some nicer halves) to my dealer later for a nice profit at 22.75x times, the rest will go on ebay.
definitely felt good - almost like getting a dream box. i always liked moving/garage/estate sales for this reason. will try to upload pics of the 2 walkers and the peace dollar later.
hope you're all having a great weekend! keep it up! HH
