FROZEN CELLAR HOLES *COPPERS & SILVER!

we got into the trails at daybreak.stayed till dark.we found a few new cellar holes.a couple were tough digging but some were manageable.
sniffy struck first copper with a no date classic head half cent.he got a decent looking shoe buckle.he got a 189? ih .
i dug a 1892 barber dime at one site.a shield shaped buckle? any ideas anyone? also a pewter shield shaped thingy that definitely was mounted to something.
a piece of sterling silver knife handle.the broken watch fob says William.L Marcy under his portrait.a ornate key hole plate & a bridle rosette
i went the whole day saying to myself not gonna get a copper today
10 mins before we were ready to call it a day ..BINGO got one.a 1845 coronet head large cent.
we had a good day!

Silver and a big fat copper. Very nice.

Re: FROZEN CELLAR HOLES *COPPERS & SILVER!

Those are some nice finds.

The same type of items I am after. Love hitting them old cellar holes. Only way to make those types of finds. I would have hunted it in that snow also. The spring will be here soon. I know you'll find more then.

That large cent is a beauty! I am happy to see that the weather doesn't stop you guys!

I found a very similar pewter shaped shield at one of my early sites. All of my coins and buttons at the site pre-date 1840, and go back to the early 1800's, so I would have to put yours in the same time frame. I never did get a positive ID on mine, but it is heavy pewter as well.

Mine was found at what may have been a campsite used to transport escaped slaves. The two Royal Regiment of Artillery buttons were the only military buttons found at the site so far, but more than 100 civilian buttons were found. So the question is, military or civilian? Maybe you will dig up a military button and that would be more of an indication.

I also found a very similar key lock plate at another site (I can't locate a picture right now), which I think is much more modern, most likely Victorian.

Nice finds!!!

yup that looks like the same pewter piece! does yours have the rusted parts on back too?
i figured the lock plate was newer .i was thinkin victorian era as well.i'm sure some buttons will surface in the spring.so much area to cover at these sites.we will be busy for awhile! Neil do ya think that shield buckle is military issued for a horse strap or bridle?
