co worker lives in ft. white and i am going up his neck of the woods, do you know about Md'ing along the santa fe river there?? if its on private or public land, co owrker is also gonna get me on his neighbors property. my co worker gave me permission for his property.

i tried getting folks motivated on a cpl facebook florida Md ing pages to get a hunt going, CTH( TN member hunt) is too far for my wife and I, i will also be looking into the civil war atlas to see where around this neck of the woods there were any camps.,etc..

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

Hello! I am brand spankin new and I am in Ocala. I have yet to go and search anywhere but my backyard, although we may go this weekend. I have been doing some research on my area and cannot wait to find some goodies. I am based over by the silver river state park.
I have been trying to get in touch with the local club here but all I keep finding is a guy who used to be in the club so I guess I will have to wait for the meeting at Gander Mt.
I was wondering if anyone has a better idea of the rules around here. I found the permit for the City of Ocala and the rules for Marion county but they are very vague and say basically that anything I find I have to give to authorities. That would take a lot of the fun out of it, even though the hunt is great. I do have a call in to the parks department since the rules say it is not prohibited. I just do not want to get in trouble when I am not trying to cause any. Thanks, HH!

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

parks you have to turn it into the authoritys?? i used to hunt public parks with no problem. state parks, and some other county places may require a permit, or not allow it at all. We are in the process of starting our club up here in alachua county. we have several older places we are working on, just not enough time to get it 100% right now....work has been crazy for most of us, or other commitments.
Try finding some older location and if you can talk to the home owner or property owner they may allow you access to their property and allow you to detect. Just REMEMBER to fill your holes andd cut proper plugs as not to damage the grass(if its a well manicured lawn)

any other questions ask away..

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

Thanks Six!
I have yet to put the rules into practice but thats what the "permit" says. I am still waiting on a reply from the county but the lady I talked to said not to leave wholes and if I find anything of value I need to turn it in, and I quote" you know like coins or relics". So I am going to try to call again today and see what they say. I am close to the Marshall Swamp trailhead and have found out that there is an old ruined civil war plantation. Now I know those are usually off limits but I cannot find anywhere that it is a "historic" place. I figure if I get permission then I am in the clear.
Thanks for the help, and will make sure I fill in any/all holes. Leave no trace is good motto and I try live by that wherever I go.
HH,
Niki

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

well the plantation may have a private owner, thats what you need to research if you know the actual name of it. look up on the internet a lady run historic/ghost walks there in ocala, she may be able to help you in researching the old plantation. ya never know!

its called http://www.ocalaghostwalks.com/

she may be of some help or not..whats the name of the plantation, my friend sundancer on here , he has taught me how to do some good research. we might be able to find a lead or 2 for ya...

let us know...gregg

GOOD LUCK!!

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

Way Awesome!
I will check out the ghost walks. The plantation was originally owned by J.Foster Marshall and supplied sugar to the confederates. From the research that I have been able to do I can only tell that after it was ravaged nothing else came of it. It is pretty hard to find anything, when I search for J. Foster I keep getting hits on his death at The Second Bull Run and where he is buried. The good bits that I got from the stories I could find says that even though the Union ransacked the place everything they took was eventually recovered by the confederates by the time they chased the Union soldiers all the way to St. Augustine, except for one horse apparently. The stories also say that they had it out at the Oklawaha river bridge (now the Sharpes Ferry Bridge) and burned it to the ground (water?) So I am itching to get into that area, still waiting on the call.
One new place of interest for me is to check out the old Six Gun Territory. I know it is not supe rold or anything but I think its nifty. we actually took a drive through there last night. It is a mostly undeveloped development that I guess got the air sucked out when the bubble burst. Its quite intersting back in there, A couple houses, paved roads and then just lampposts for no good reason anymore. I am trying to do more resarch on that now as we found what looks like a bike/walking trail next to it but no way to get in.
Thanks for the help!

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

your very welcome...good luck, post pics of your finds ...six gun i think used to have a small train ride for kids or something i remember reading something that used to be back there...gregg

Re: gainesville Club / research group - *updated*

Six Gun Territory used to be a major attraction in the area. It had at one point the largest sky ride as well as a man made mountain facade to hide the parking lot from the people inside the park. It was apparently pretty huge. I am finding out out all kinds of cool stuff that was once Ocala. Check this site out, its pretty cool: http://www.lostparks.com/sixgun.html
