I find the most mysterious things in my artifact field. I'm not cleaning any more, the brown shell part is coming off. For what I can see, looks to be made from clam shell or some type of shell. Kinda thick. Game piece? It had to of been smoothed down.

Or one of those goofy things people are putting in their ears these days.....

Definitely a cool game piece of some sort.

Maybe an ear ring/plug ? Be curious what the experts say. Nice find. Oh wait SemperFi already suggested that, lol.

Nice game piece save River Rat. Cool find for sure.

LOL, earring?? :laughing7:

Holy cow, Gomerize that bish quick! That orange patina/crust/shell should stay on the piece. Sweet. Either a large bead blank or game piece and I lean towards game piece AKA shell disk cause it's mighty thick.

Very Nice Find!

I guess I'll be the only one to say it looks more like a large Bead Preform to me. I have seen some huge Shell Disc Beads before.

i still think it was a mussel shell gambling (game) piece...but i may be wrong??

My frame of gaming pieces sure look a lot like yours. I'd say gaming piece!

In the for what its worth column, I also think it's a game piece. I have some made out of pottery like NC Field hunter posted.

I think it looks like an ear spool, RiverRat....look at these examples: Stone Ear Spools
What ever it turns out to be, I bet it was a thrill for you to find it, wasn't it? :icon_thumleft:

You sure find some cool stuff. I think this site will help you when it comes to shell artifacts. Please check it out. www.aboriginalantiquities.com.

I'm with reaper on this one! I think it is a bead preform. Sure is small for a game piece only being the size of a quarter.....................Nice find RR...................GTP(Chris)

I have two frames of game pieces. They are fairly common just over the VA. Line . I have some quarter size to 50 cent piece size . The back of his is what makes me say game piece. As far as beads go, I've only found one my whole life. So, I'm no help on the bead comparison.

Very similiar in make and design. I did not know they made game pieces so small. Are they historic or woodland? Up here in Pa and NJ not too many game pieces found. if they are found they are discoidals.

Are you guys forgetting that this is shell and was most likely made where the shell came from. You would have to compare it to artifacts from the gulf coastal region.

Here are three Mississippian shell gorgets from the gulf coastal region. It may also be a game disk.
