Picked this set up for cheap at a garage sale. I can make out all the text except the last name of Jennie as well as the word that follows Ball....anyone care to help me solve the riddle of who the folks are if possible?

Looks like Winder or something after "Jennie". And it says "presented" after "Balls". Nice find

Looking at it again, I think it says "Duke Bates", not balls.

Yeah, pretty rough read. There's a word between Ball and Thomas....cant figure that one or the first three characters of the last name of Jennie. Yeah, I'm pretty happy with having the complete set.

Yeah, for sure Duke Bates, but I'm assuming not "a duke but rather Duke being his name.

You have an eternity to get help deciphering what it says. Great score

True, very True! Thank you!

It says "Bud" I think, after Thomas, and Im 99% sure the first letter in the word after Jennie is a capitalized "W". After that the "inder" looks pretty clear, but it looks like theres another letter or two in between what I think is the "W" and the "inder".

SHE HAS THE LOOKS OF A FEMALE SPY. NICE FIND ...

She was assassinated directly after this picture was taken. Makes this find very historic and valuable!;D

Very cool old history you have here. Cherish it even if they aren't your relatives. It's civil war old and deserves to be preserved for those to come. Great score!:icon_salut:

Those are some very nice pieces.

Kind of looks like they could be brother and sister, facial features look very much the same. Pretty neat items.

Once my grandma told me to check the frames to see if they are real gold on old pics like those. Somtimes the hollow type frames are real gold !!

I'm seeing "to her loving friend Duke Bates".

She looks like Lizzy Bordon in a prison outfit. Very cool!

This is from the 1870 census. Duke Bates is living in the home the Wunder family (his in-laws?) in Cincinnati, Ohio. His wife is "Vagima" which is probably more likely "Virginia" and "Jennie" would be a proper nickname for that.
