I picked mine up right before Christmas and it DOES HAVE the metal connector.
 

One of the reasons i got rid of my AT Pro was the crappy way you had to connect the headphones and coil…And i was a Garrett user since the early 80's…
 

Making a connection with the plug is very difficult if you have big fingers of small fingers. Use of a needle nose pliers helps.

Sandman i had a hard time with those connectors … I would have to find my glasses .. then with the arthritis in my fingers made it a job to do it ….It would take me 10 minutes to 15 minutes to get it connected…... I can not see why they wanted to make it so hard to connect the coil & headphones … And any how after spending about $45.00 to ship it back for repairs 3 times and it still was not right i got rid of it...
