Garrett Infinium has anyone tried it and pros/cons? Does it Disc hot rocks??

Hi everyone I was wondering how the Garrett Infinium works? I heard it is a PI machine and goes really deep!! From my research I have been seeing guys using it to look for gold nuggets in the hills because it works so good at discriminating all those hot rocks!! I am having that problem in Hawaii and am trying to find a detector that cancels those things out!! Please let me know what you guys think of this machine! Aloha

depends on the hotrocks. I had an Infinium and it went wild over a certain hotrock we have up in S.W. B.C. .. but so did a Minelab GPX 4000 and every other PI/VLF I've seen used in this area. On the other hand, I used the Infinium in areas that were more-or-less unhuntable with a VLF (including multifrequency detectors) due to hotrocks/mineralization. ..Willy.

I replied to your other post about detectors. I use the Infinium for water hunting and the Minelab Sovereign for the beach. I have not used the Infinium for hunting hot rock areas so I can't tell you. There is a forum specifically for Infinium users. If you Google "Garrett Infinium Forum", you can pick up on it. You can read about the Infinium and just about everything that anyone has had to say about it world wide.

It is a great machine for water hunting. I can't say enough good things about it. I have done well with it in the surf. I use the Sovereign for the beach simply because it gives me a better avenue for discriminating and quite frankly, I like to change detectors and use something different every now and then so the Sovereign gives me a good change on the beach. It is also a good relic machine and I do go inland and hunt Civil War relics.

Try the forum and see what you can find there. John Edmonson who posts here on Beach and Shallow Water and also on the Garrett Forum is fairly knowledgeable about the Infinium and has used it a great deal in many different conditions. You can drop him a line also to see what he thinks. He is snowed in in Canada and isn't getting out much right now.

Good luck. I really like my Infinium! Just don't know what it will do in hot rocks.

Had one used it a Myrtle Beach some. It was a good machine and goes deep. Discriminates small iron well but you will dig a huge amount of Beer Caps that was the reason I sold mine and got a Minelab Excal. I like it alot.

I am not sure how the Excalibur is missing bottle caps. My Sovereign finds em just like my Infinium. Every other person I have seen posting here with Excaliburs and Sovereigns are finding bottle caps right along with me.

If there is a secret to the bottle caps with Minelabs someone let me know what I am doing wrong!

Not getting smart here. Just hoping maybe I have been doing something wrong and can get away from it since I did buy the Sovereign to help on that issue on the dry beach. I have no problems in the water with it since there are few bottle caps in the water.

As I've previously posted, I compared a Sov., Excal., and Infinium in real world conditions on the same buried targets and.. the Infinium left the other two detectors gasping in dismay. This also brings up a major beef of mine. I don't know HOW many times I've read that the the BBS/FBS detectors are some sort of 'secret PI tech' (or something along those lines) and are super deep, ignore bad ground, yadda yadda yadda.. WHAT TOTAL BULL$HIT!! Run them up against a real PI (in anything but the mildest ground) and it quickly becomes obvious that those guys don't know squat. Anyway, now that that's off my chest, I feel a lot better. ..Willy.

I know exactly what you're talking about! I've owned and now own various detectors and water machines and can truly say that nothing I've used has come close to the Infinium's stability and depth in tough ground conditions!!!

Thanks guys I really appreciate all of your help with this subject, I would love to get another machine but don't know which to get? It is between this new Infinium or an Excalibur but everyone seems to be going with the Infinium!! Is it better than the Surf PI? I own 2 of them but would love to get another machine that has good depth because I want to find the deep gold that everyone has missed on my beach. What size coil would be good for that machine? Does the bigger coil find small pieces of gold or should I get a smaller coil? I am not digging up gold bars unfortunately but does it make that much difference? Is this machine that hard to use? I owned an a Surf PI and now the Infinium PI and there is no doubt the Infinium is much much better. First, the Infinium gives a clear two tone indication of Possible Gold (High/Low) Tone and Possible Silver (Low/High) tone. I choose to ignore the silver tones unless I am finding hardly any targets. Then I will dig a silver tone. The gold tone works for all gold no matter the size of the item or type of gold, palladium and platinum. You get the same (High/Low) tone for all. Of course you get the same tone for small pieces of aluminum and other items that fit into the gold range. By sticking with the gold type tones for digging. I move rapidly through a target field without guessing, waving the coil back and forth a million times listening to the tones, etc. I just get better results, plus it is clearly very very deep. I use it on the dry sand also but like to switch to my Sovereign just for kicks and a change.

The Infinium gives you the ability to change coils on the spot. There are five total right now that you can use. I have a 3x7 DD coil, 8 inch mono coil and a 10x14 inch DD coil. The 8 inch coil is my favorite but I use the large coil for covering large areas quickly and the small coil for trashy areas. I am looking to buy the 14 inch mono coil and the 5X10 inch DD Coil hopefully this year.which will complete the lot.

You can also change headphones on the Infinium on the spot from land phones to water phones. I use the land phones on land and in calm surf, they are much more comfortable and I use the water phones when I believe I will get my head wet. That is a really good feature.

I hip mount the Infinium with the included hip mount pouch which is very good and the control box is compact but built like a tank. The batteries are easy to change out and it comes with a rechargeable pack and a regular pack. You also get a home and car charger. You can make a long shaft for walking and a short shaft for diving out of the stock shaft provided.

I won't bash the Excalibur because there are lots of friends of mine on here that use it and they do well. I believe it is preference to your hunting style and comfort level with your detector. I studied them all and read a ton before I bought and decided on the Infinium for water because I felt it was what I wanted. I have not regretted that decision. I bought the Sovereign for the dry land because I also like to coin shoot and relic hunt away from the beach and it is a good machine both for the dry and wet sandy beach and for the relic and coin hunting. It was a little harder to get used to the Sovereign than my White's machines of the past but now that I am pretty comfortable with it, I don't think I will change anytime soon. I find it to be a better machine depth wise to the White's that I have used in the past. The White's are more user friendly but the Sovereign is a great machine for a serious and experienced hunter.

Man, I didn't mean to talk so long but there it is. My friends do well with the Excalibur. I do well with the Infinium. Some of my other friends to well with the Infinium too. Yet others do well with the Tesoros and White's. I believe if you read the reviews and look at the capabilities of them all along with their accessories, etc., you will find a machine that has most of what you are looking for in price, performance and versatility.

Don;t wait too long though. We just might find all the loot before you get started!!!! RIGHT!!!!!!

The way I leave the bottle caps behind with the Excal is to listen carful a bottle cap will sound scratchy or break up some. I have never dug a gold target that sounds like a bottle cap with the Excal. The infinium is deeper but you will dig many more trash targetes with it where I hunt alot at the beach I do not have time to dig bottle caps all day. I also will let alot of the high targets go (Coins). I am at the beach looking for gold i loose a silver ring or two by not digging the high sounds but digging gold is my game and I have had great luck doing this got a bunc of gold last year. Sold the infinium got tired of digging those bottle caps. Never had a problem with the Excal being stable in the salt. Will need to get a strait shaft on the excal as the stock one is uncomfortable to hunt with.

no problem. Get you some caps and do some testing. Get some new and some rusty ones off the beach. Let me know how it comes out. bet you will be able to tell the difference. Test a good target then go over the cap. You will find that every now and then you will get one that sounds good enough to dig but most will not. Good luck.

You're a brave person, Willy!

A lot has been said (written) about the great advantages of BBS (and many other things pertaining to this hobby) but so far no real scientific proof (that I'm aware of) has ever been presented that proves the superiority of BBS over other VLF systems. Mostly it's just like 99.9% of everything else we read--pure hearsay.

I pretty much lump all VLF's together. If ground conditions are just right most any good VLF machine will get super depth. What I'm told is the Infinium (and all good PI's) get significantly greater depth than the VLF's do in any type of soil. That's what I'm counting on for this spring/summer/fall.
