Gotta love that Novaculite, I know I do. NC/VA is renowned for its Rhyolite & Quartz, so aquiring Novaculite, especially pink, is a joy. ::)
I like the Gary type, here on the Eastern seaboard, they are known as Morrow Mountains, they used to be referred to as Garys but, they changed it..I rarely find whole Morrow Mts/Garys.

Thankyou for sharing Spot, its a beautiful point.

Molly.

Beautiful piece of work and thanks for sharing it. However, I don't believe this one to be a Gary either. I wrote an article some time back on the "Gary" / Krieger points...I really should see if I can find that somewhere.

Question, the stem on that isn't lightly ground by any chance is it?

I'll pull it from the frame and check for grinding. However, I recall no grinding on either of these pink points.

Thanks for looking,

spot

There is no grinding on the stem of this point nor on the other large pink Novaculite piece known as "Big Pinky".

I think it was Neanderthal that asked about this.

I appreciate you checking Spot, those are wonderful points. Talk about coincidence, I thought about you and this post last friday at work. I was taking some pictures of several of Greg Perino's favorite Novaculite points from his collection. One of them is a very large Novaculite Gary point from Ark., along with the Little River cache that his wife recovered, and many other colorful treasures. I may try to post pics of some of them sometime - you may have to remind me though, as I'm very forgetful.

Here in Texas, that point is a Langtry...never seen one made of noviculite tho....Nice find...

Afternoon Neanderthal and everyone else too,

Thanks you for your kind offer to picture some of Perino's points. I've handled the little river cache and also some of his best novaculite. A friend of mine owned several of these particular items at one time which he purchased from Greg before the auctions ever began. He has since disposed of those items. Those points are great but most of them have or need slight restoration. Beautiful stuff!

I own his point typology books also and he is clear that there are many Gary variants; I think he called it at seventeen. I don't have the third book though and I should get a copy somewhere. I got the first two at his home. Great guy and sorely missed by those who knew him and were blessed to have spent time in his presence

Thanks for looking,

Spot, the Little River cache is still basically intact over at the museum. A few of the cache do have slight restoration on them, but the majority do not. The "auction" didn't fare too well for Greg, I remember him bitching about it. David Bogle purchased greg's collection from him when the auction fell through and many of them now reside in his museum in Bentonville, Ark.

If interested in volume 3, I may have some of them for sale soon. His rarest publication was one that the majority of the public wasn't aware of. He made a few copies of a small typology handbook (not the 3 volume set with Bell) available only to the OAS members. At one of the OAS meetings some years ago, there were only a few copies left and I bought them all. I'm notorious for losing things and have misplaced the box of them (Uggh). We lost several of the good guys over the past few years, Robert Bell is another.

You DO know why the auction didn't go well for him ... don't you?

Are ya'll talking about 'Guide to the identification of certain AMERICAN INDIAN PROJECTILE POINTS' special bulletin No.3 Oklahoma Anthropological Sociey. by Greg Perino?

If so I have 1,2 & 3. Just curious.

Molly.

Hi Molly,

The book set I referred to is named, "Selected Points and Knives orf the North American Indians". There are three volumes each containing pages with good pen and ink renderings of several different variations within a type. Age, range and use are also listed. The author is the late Gregory Perino, a famous archaeologist without a degree in the science of archaeology. A champion of archaeology and of the collector, Mr. Periono made vast contributions to the study of the North American Aborigines by countless publications and papers based on his actual field work. He was very much the "real deal".

Molly, I bet you would really like these books, I mean.....what's not to like about 'em?... ;>)'s

Thanks for looking,
