General Cemetery Question

Why did they build high stone walls around some old cemeteries ? I have my own thoughts and would like to see yours first

Over here in Britain at least, it’s generally believed that high stone walls around graveyards not only delineated areas of sacred ground but also served a practical purpose. They kept out livestock and scavenging animals (including dogs) to prevent grave plots being dug up or trampled, grave markers being disturbed, and graves being soiled with manure.

OK over hear if a cemetery was in low land areas when floods came they would wash away the dirt and some times the caskets i was told. In the cemetery I pictured the Bevers person was buried here a second time. The first time he was buried near this place it flooded and he was washed away. he was recovered and then they built this stone walls around it. Kind of makes sense I think he was buried around 1816

Well yesterday I got the new flag pole up. This cemetery was started in 1819 our township used to take care of it. Now i guess it is my job. How does it look ? BTW There is a Revoultionary soldier buried there !!

I came across a cemetery yesterday that is in dire need of refurbishment.
Looks like it hasn't been cared for since 1952 when the State of Georgia took over the land.

There is actually three cemeteries in the area that they have neglected.

Yes, three of them.
The state took over the land because they were flooding the area around the sites.
A new dam in the 1950's. But they were supposed to take care of the area and the cemeteries.

I'd be on a spiral trying to figure them all out! That's a wild find!

Gare, I did the same thing here. Found a cemetery in the woods . Totally hidden by foliage, and research indicated a solider from the Revolutionary War was buried there. Track his great great great great grandson and he came in from Michigan for a dedication of the cemetery. We got the historical society from the town involved. I met with the land owner a major corporation and they donated the land to the town......... I can go on and on but Just want to tell you NICE JOB ....jim

Thank you for the kind words Jim. I am a member here of i think 6 Historical societies If we do not take care of these old cemeterie=s they will not be taken care of. Out town ship used to take care of this oine but stopped 4 or 5 years ago. I have more in my area the owners of the property do not want them taken care of because a lot of people come in and damage them .
Jim lets get back together in the near future and go detecting . Either here or back up with you in your area

Where I grew up it was pretty much to keep the cattle out. There used to be a lot of open range around there, and sometimes it was a local farmer or rancher who donated the land. Good job as always on cemetery upkeep Gare. I used to do that for some family cemeteries in Oklahoma, but I'm far away now. I don't think any of the younger generations does much these days, but they do show up on Decoration Day still.

Neglected cemeteries really annoy me. I know of many that are on Providence Water Supply Board land here in Scituate. They've put up fences and no trespassing signs everywhere to keep people out, so only PWSB can maintain them. They do maintain some that are visable from public roads, but the ones deeper in the woods are ignored. When the state took half the town by eminent domain in 1915, they should have required PWSB to maintain ALL the cemeteries that are on the land they took from the town. I assume they didn't think to include that in the deal, since so many cemeteries are overgrown and in disrepair on their land. Not right...

Last friday I got our township to come give me a hand at fixing up the cemetery . Now the easy part is to clean them up after the set for a bit. I have to sand off the glue on the top part
