Getting Permission To MD At Active Schools Question

Sonja, I would contact the school superintendant especially if you have several schools in your town because a principal can only give you permission for his particular school wheras the super. has authority on all the schools in his district. HH

Thanks!

Actually when I first moved to the island the elementary I used to go to was not near the Junior High or High School which were only 1 or 2 miles from each other with a big field and sports yard seperating them. But it and another elementary were eventually closed when a new one was built on what used to be wooded area where I had to do a fun run while in JH right next to the JH. So now all the schools are within one area. Does that make sense?

I'll have to find out what the superindentants phone # is.

So when I what's the best way to ask for permission?

I've always been straightforward and told them of my hobby of MDing. Let them know that any trash you find will be picked up and there will be no holes left. Also if any class rings that can be traced back to the original owners will be held by you while they look through school records. Most important is asking what restrictions they might have such as hunting a freshly sodded football field-well you get the idea. Best of luck and hope to hear and see your posts. HH

Hello SonjaMarie! When you get permission, they will probably ask that you do not detect there during school hours. Remember to practice filling in your dig sites so nicely that someone can hardly tell that you have been there. Good luck. Spotz

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind when I call Monday. I hope I get permission, my places I can reach to MD are kinda dwindling and then without places to go there's not much reason to have one :( !

You live on an Island with a lot of beach don't you? All you need is a place that people have gone to often in the past or the present. You can always catch a ferry to the mainland. I'm sure that Zombee is moving around in Tacoma. Email him for some ideas. Spotz

Yeah but our beaches suck they're mostly rocky and I don't know many of the other locations besides where I live, I haven't made it to the one sandy one by me yet cause the tide hasn't been out when it's warm enough to go. Despite living here awhile I don't know the island very well and since I can't drive it's hard to go to places to hunt lol.

I have to wait to get my application for the permit to hunt at one park on the island, can't wait for that.

Sonja! Take a deep breath, sit in front of the computer & smile! A few days ago you were in agony, waiting for your detector to arrive. Then you were in despair because you couldn't find anything good. Then you made your first finds. Then you started making better finds. Now you are blue because you are looking for more places to detect. I go back to a lot of the same places & go slower. I Hunt from a different direction. I make grid squares in my mind & go over the same ground in grids. You need to remember that no matter how many times you detect a site, you will never find everything buried there. It is all in layers in the ground. Don't get discouraged when you find junk. Dig it up & put it in the trash, then the next time you detect, you may not find as much stuff, but when you find something, it will probably be better than what you found there befeore. Things will be deeper & sometimes you can barely hear the beep in your ear phones. Maybe it is a nice silver coin down deep. You will never run out of places to detect if you do this, but you will find less junk & although your finds may be a lot fewer, they will usually be better. Smile girl. You are doing a good job, but you will have to be patient too. Spotz

Thanks Spotz,

Patience is one virtue I lack most times.

I guess I'm getting bored with my own yard! The last two days I haven't found anything interesting and my arm was been bothering me so I couldn't stay out long. What frustrates me is when I get a strong signal and I can't find what the thing is, even if I just dig up trash at least I find out what the signal was.

Here is a map of the island I live on, I circled the little piece of island I live on:

Has anyone been told they could hunt if they give the School/Owner/Etc what they find? As much as I like to find stuff, I'd hate to have to give it away to someone who didn't even have to do the work for it.

Sonja Marie

around here I keep everything. I tell them I'll bring Class rings I find in for ID, so I can track them down. But None have requested I give anything to them. I talk to the Superintendent. unless I just happen to see a Grounds keeper. I'v NEVER been turned down at schools, Just told "Not ON the Football Field" itself.

I'll call the superindentant first thing when I wake up tomorrow, I'll report back what I get told, hopefully it's a "yes".

Sonja Marie

I'v always done Face to Face, But , I don't know your area. Do they have "LOCK DOWNS" there ? if not, a face to face may be better. ................ either way , Good luck & Happy Hunting

All the schools in my area have lock downs but all one has to do to get in is press a button and you get buzzed in within seconds. of course I have kids in the schools so it is real easy for me.

mike

None of our schools on the island have lockdowns, I've never actually seen one myself.

Public schools in my state and I would guess in most states are public property and you can hunt them with our without permission, but it's always nice to ask first just to make them feel important :)

You can't MD a school while the kids are in school it has to be after school or on the weekends.
Onion

OR, that makes sense when you consider that we pay for them to be there so we should have some access to the grounds. who cares if it after school hours as long as we can do it.

mike

I guess I wonder what I should do if I ask and they say no.
