Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Would like to get into metal detecting. Was wondering what type of unit would be a good starter. Willing to spend between 3 and 6 hundred bucks. Where is best to purchase? Online? Also is a pointer really necessary when starting out. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

1st - Noticed this is your very first post. So, welcome aboard from the great state of Pennsylvania (USA).

2nd - If you haven't already - you didn't mention your state (or country) - but you might consider jumping over to Sub-Forums: Select Your Area.... and selecting your state for information (i.e., clubs, hunts, finds, legends, maps, etc.) directly related to your state (or country).
3rd - Whatever MD you finally decide on - please consider buying one from one of

Welcome! Models depend on the type of hunting you intend to do. Relics, water hunting beaches, streams , Lakes ,coins, jewelry are all types of targets. Whichever you decide, try to get a Pro-pointer, it will save you a tremendous amount of time.

The Garrett Ace 250/350 series and the Fisher F2/F4 are in your price range. Add a Garrett Pro-pointer, some headphones and a good digging tool and you are good to go.

Call me if I can help you in your decision!
