BEAUTIFUL JOSTENS 10K CLASS RING:
Jostens is an American company providing yearbooks and class rings for various high schools and colleges as well as championship rings for sports, including the Super Bowlrings.
24 karat gold - 100% Au - pure gold, very soft and very easily bent, too soft for jewelry.
Therefore the gold is alloyed with silver, copper, nickel or zinc:
22 karat gold - 91.7% Au - still too soft for most jewelry
18 karat gold - 75.0% Au - for fine jewelry, the best for beauty and durability
14 karat gold - 58.3% Au - OK for jewelry but the gold is of a duller colour
12 karat gold - 50.0% Au - not OK for most western jewelry
10 karat gold - 41.7% Au - legal limit for 'real' gold in USA
WHITE GOLD is NOT PLATINUM but is a good cheaper substitute = gold+nickel+copper+zinc.
What is the composition of White Gold?
Contrary to the popular belief, White Gold is not a metal. It is an alloy of yellow gold mixed with white metals, usually Manganese, Nickel, or Palladium. White Gold is measured in karats. A typical White Gold alloy formulation consists of 90 wt.% yellow gold and 10 wt.% other metal. Gold in its pure form, is very soft and cannot be used to for making jewelry. Historically, most people prefer the color of gold jewelry that remains close to that of pure yellow gold itself. Jewelry makers add different metals such as copper to increase malleability of gold. In jewelry manufacturing industry, gold-palladium-silver and gold-nickel-copper-zinc are the common alloys. Nickel and palladium are used as primary bleaching agents and zinc is used as a secondary bleaching agent to soothe the color of copper.
What is the difference between White Gold and Platinum?
White Gold and Platinum have different composition and properties which make them unique. White Gold is an alloy of yellow gold and some white metals. White Gold ornaments are coated with another white metal called rhodium. The rhodium plating makes the white gold look more brighter. The natural hue of white gold is actually a light grey color. On the other hand, platinum is a white metal being approximately 95% pure. Platinum is very white, extremely hard and long lasting. It is much heavier(dense) than White Gold alloy. Platinum is much more expensive than white gold. A platinum ring will approximately cost twice the price of an 18kt white gold ring
