GOLD! GOLD and... silver? DANG!
It’s Labor Day weekend, or was, it’s winding down to a close now as it nears Midnight Sunday evening... well then again Monday *IS* Labor Day so I guess the weekend has at least one more day before it’s over. Cool! Anyway, back to what I was saying... It’s Labor Day weekend and I found myself with no errands to run, no prior obligations to attend to, and a few hours free time to do whatever the heck I wanted to do. So what do I do? That’s right! Go Metal Detecting. Now, being aware that it is a holiday weekend and therefore the parks that I normally prefer to hunt are likely to be packed like sardines, I had to find a place that I could find a little room to swing my detector. I opted for the park that I hunted, partially that recently hosted an Arts Fair. Last week I hunted there for a while, but only scratched the surface so to speak. Woodland Park is a BIG park for a downtown kind of park. Okay with all the holiday weekend visitors there this weekend I figured that since nobody was using the baseball field THAT’S where I’d hunt. During the Arts Fair the baseball field was used as vendor parking, all the trucks, trailers, RV’s and campers were parked there all weekend. I figured that I might get lucky and find some coins and stuff there... if I looked patiently and diligently enough.
Well I must have “looked diligently patient” enough because I did indeed find some stuff. Stuff other than a realization that a baseball diamond tends to “fan” out so it’s difficult to search in straight lines or “lanes” as I would a soccer field or football field. I had to do quite a bit of overlapping in my back and forth across the outfield. It paid off though. I found several dollars worth of coins scattered about here and there and a few pocket spills to boot. Those are kind of fun... when your, or at least MY detector whoops and blats and beeps mixed signals for coins of all denominations and sizes and just won’t settle on anything in particular. I also get this when I happen upon a largish piece of tin roofing now and then... <shuddering> Anyway, the pocket spills are fun, if you have a pin pointer that is. A penny here, a dime there , a nickel or two, maybe a quarter, more pennies.... all within inches of each other. Of course sometimes you get that cluster or cloister of pull tabs that can be just as distracting. But you have do dig them.. if you don’t, you might miss other goodies too. Like the occasional bling. Perhaps a treasure like a lost house key? Or a trailer hitch key... I found some today.

Keys.webp

Not to worry though, I found more than keys... I found some hardware too, though perhaps not the kind that you might be thinking. This hardware is more apt to be found in a playground, but then, a baseball field *IS* a playground isn’t it?

Stuff.webp

And those dang birds! I’ve never actually seen one of those fabled “Golf” birds... yet... But I keep finding their “eggs” around the parks that I hunt.

Ball.webp

Not so rare perhaps, but I’ll pick them up and cart them home anytime I find one, or a dozen. I’ll also pick up coins, be they monetary or tokens. I found one today that I’ve never seen before. I’m sure someone is familiar with them but it’s “rare” to me, at least around these parts anyway ... and TINY!

Token Comp.webp

Cool finds those tokens, even the itty bitty ones. But things took a turn the strange not far from the token discovery. I found a pin that sent me into a television, childhood, flashback. Anybody else out there remember Marlin Perkins and his trusty side kick Jim? You know Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Well someone was awarded this little pin from Mutual of Omaha for... swimming? Hmmm... must have outs wam an alligator or crocodile or something maybe. <laughing> Then there was a child’s earring... a shiny little star... junk. But not all bling is junk. Every once in a while you dig up something that makes you just want to get up and BOOGIE THE HAPPY DANCE! YEAH... Uh Huh... That’s the Way I like it! Uh Huh Uh Huh... Do a little Dance... Make a little Noise... Uh Huh Uh Huh! GOLD BABY!
I dug up (scratched the surface really) this honkin chunk ring, all shiny and yellow, positively GLOWING. It sure looked like gold! I could even see hallmarks inside the band... FIVE of them. Five? Hmmmm... I’ll have to wait till I get home and get a closer look, I thought. But it didn’t end there. I found ANOTHER ring not too far from that first one. The second ring was not so heavy but it was glowing, somewhat, yellow too. No hallmarks on the second ring though. Good reason too, it was NOT gold. Probably came out of a gumball machine. Oh it was fun to find though, but I was still zinging from the first ring. Stay calm man... get a grip man! Anyway, the bling was totaled up as this.

Bling.webp

That Second ring wasn’t that impressive at all, and not a hint of gold other than it’s color.

Ring6.webp

The first ring however certainly looks and feels like gold.

After some cleaning I could see some of the hallmarks a bit better but they still seem to be a bit out of focus. And, that sure looks like a .925 ... *sigh* Silver that looks like gold?

Ring Marks Comp.webp

Dipped or plated maybe? I don’t know. I do know that I’m going to have to get myself a Jeweler’s Loupe so I can see those small stamps and hallmarks a little more easily. Well if it does turn out to be gold over silver so be it, it was still a blast to find! I was PUMPED! I’m STILL Pumped! Here it is almost midnight and I’m still up and talking (typing) about it. Yeah, Gold Fever!
I was so rattled by finding the bling that I called it a day early on my detecting and headed to the house. Just as well, dinner wasn’t going to fix itself and my wife would be coming home from her work soon. A little disappointed (potentially) with the gold/silver ring I had to put aside my finds until I fixed dinner, and of course ate and spent time with my darling before I could get back to the tallying and sorting. I’ve had bigger days as far as coin counts go, but then I’ve had lower counts too. I think I pretty well covered my gas with what I found today anyway, and maybe a cold soda or two as well. Not that the coins end up being spent on those things, at least not until they are pulled out of the vacation fund and used for, well, Vacation.

Clad.webp

Oh well, I’ve had fun this weekend, and I’ve still got a whole other day off yet too! Here’s hoping that everyone else out there is having as good a time or better this weekend as I’ve had. And as always...

Well as of now I don't own a testing kit or an electronic tester for gold or other precious metals so I have to take suspected items to a jeweler to find out just what it might be. Silver is pretty easy to dertermine, usually, but gold? unless it has a stamp on it I just don't know. Fortunately a girl I went to school with back in High School now runs her family's jewelery store and has offered to have a look at anything I dig up and bring in. She also told me she could "hook me up" with a decent and reasonably priced loupe. I'll be stopping by their store later this week.
Oh well, gold or not the big ring was a great find in my book. I've had a wonderful Labor Day Weekend so far. Hope you all have as well.

No, it's definately .925... the ring actually weighs in at exactly 9 grams or 1/4 ounce though. <laughing>

Since the price of gold went over 1000.00 you see lots of gold over silver in most jewlery departments, nice finds.

Oh definately! I get pumped everytime I find something silver, so you can imagine how juiced I was when I uncovered that big hunk of gold! Only it may not be gold... but gold OVER silver. Either way it was an exciting find and I was quite pleased with myself. <grin>
