GOLD! GOLD and... silver? DANG!
It’s Labor Day weekend, or was, it’s winding down to a close now as it nears Midnight Sunday evening... well then again Monday *IS* Labor Day so I guess the weekend has at least one more day before it’s over. Cool! Anyway, back to what I was saying... It’s Labor Day weekend and I found myself with no errands to run, no prior obligations to attend to, and a few hours free time to do whatever the heck I wanted to do. So what do I do? That’s right! Go Metal Detecting. Now, being aware that it is a holiday weekend and therefore the parks that I normally prefer to hunt are likely to be packed like sardines, I had to find a place that I could find a little room to swing my detector. I opted for the park that I hunted, partially that recently hosted an Arts Fair. Last week I hunted there for a while, but only scratched the surface so to speak. Woodland Park is a BIG park for a downtown kind of park. Okay with all the holiday weekend visitors there this weekend I figured that since nobody was using the baseball field THAT’S where I’d hunt. During the Arts Fair the baseball field was used as vendor parking, all the trucks, trailers, RV’s and campers were parked there all weekend. I figured that I might get lucky and find some coins and stuff there... if I looked patiently and diligently enough.
Well I must have “looked diligently patient” enough because I did indeed find some stuff. Stuff other than a realization that a baseball diamond tends to “fan” out so it’s difficult to search in straight lines or “lanes” as I would a soccer field or football field. I had to do quite a bit of overlapping in my back and forth across the outfield. It paid off though. I found several dollars worth of coins scattered about here and there and a few pocket spills to boot. Those are kind of fun... when your, or at least MY detector whoops and blats and beeps mixed signals for coins of all denominations and sizes and just won’t settle on anything in particular. I also get this when I happen upon a largish piece of tin roofing now and then... <shuddering> Anyway, the pocket spills are fun, if you have a pin pointer that is. A penny here, a dime there , a nickel or two, maybe a quarter, more pennies.... all within inches of each other. Of course sometimes you get that cluster or cloister of pull tabs that can be just as distracting. But you have do dig them.. if you don’t, you might miss other goodies too. Like the occasional bling. Perhaps a treasure like a lost house key? Or a trailer hitch key... I found some today.

Keys.webp

Not to worry though, I found more than keys... I found some hardware too, though perhaps not the kind that you might be thinking. This hardware is more apt to be found in a playground, but then, a baseball field *IS* a playground isn’t it?

Stuff.webp

And those dang birds! I’ve never actually seen one of those fabled “Golf” birds... yet... But I keep finding their “eggs” around the parks that I hunt.

Ball.webp

Not so rare perhaps, but I’ll pick them up and cart them home anytime I find one, or a dozen. I’ll also pick up coins, be they monetary or tokens. I found one today that I’ve never seen before. I’m sure someone is familiar with them but it’s “rare” to me, at least around these parts anyway ... and TINY!

Token Comp.webp

Cool finds those tokens, even the itty bitty ones. But things took a turn the strange not far from the token discovery. I found a pin that sent me into a television, childhood, flashback. Anybody else out there remember Marlin Perkins and his trusty side kick Jim? You know Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom. Well someone was awarded this little pin from Mutual of Omaha for... swimming? Hmmm... must have outs wam an alligator or crocodile or something maybe. <laughing> Then there was a child’s earring... a shiny little star... junk. But not all bling is junk. Every once in a while you dig up something that makes you just want to get up and BOOGIE THE HAPPY DANCE! YEAH... Uh Huh... That’s the Way I like it! Uh Huh Uh Huh... Do a little Dance... Make a little Noise... Uh Huh Uh Huh! GOLD BABY!
I dug up (scratched the surface really) this honkin chunk ring, all shiny and yellow, positively GLOWING. It sure looked like gold! I could even see hallmarks inside the band... FIVE of them. Five? Hmmmm... I’ll have to wait till I get home and get a closer look, I thought. But it didn’t end there. I found ANOTHER ring not too far from that first one. The second ring was not so heavy but it was glowing, somewhat, yellow too. No hallmarks on the second ring though. Good reason too, it was NOT gold. Probably came out of a gumball machine. Oh it was fun to find though, but I was still zinging from the first ring. Stay calm man... get a grip man! Anyway, the bling was totaled up as this.

Bling.webp

That Second ring wasn’t that impressive at all, and not a hint of gold other than it’s color.

Ring6.webp

The first ring however certainly looks and feels like gold.

Ring4.webp
Ring5.webp

After some cleaning I could see some of the hallmarks a bit better but they still seem to be a bit out of focus. And, that sure looks like a .925 ... *sigh* Silver that looks like gold?

Ring Marks Comp.webp

Dipped or plated maybe? I don’t know. I do know that I’m going to have to get myself a Jeweler’s Loupe so I can see those small stamps and hallmarks a little more easily. Well if it does turn out to be gold over silver so be it, it was still a blast to find! I was PUMPED! I’m STILL Pumped! Here it is almost midnight and I’m still up and talking (typing) about it. Yeah, Gold Fever!
I was so rattled by finding the bling that I called it a day early on my detecting and headed to the house. Just as well, dinner wasn’t going to fix itself and my wife would be coming home from her work soon. A little disappointed (potentially) with the gold/silver ring I had to put aside my finds until I fixed dinner, and of course ate and spent time with my darling before I could get back to the tallying and sorting. I’ve had bigger days as far as coin counts go, but then I’ve had lower counts too. I think I pretty well covered my gas with what I found today anyway, and maybe a cold soda or two as well. Not that the coins end up being spent on those things, at least not until they are pulled out of the vacation fund and used for, well, Vacation.

Clad.webp

Oh well, I’ve had fun this weekend, and I’ve still got a whole other day off yet too! Here’s hoping that everyone else out there is having as good a time or better this weekend as I’ve had. And as always...

Cool finds man!

That's weird that you found a Baggallini zipper pull. My sister worked for Baggallini back in the day when they first started their business in Portland Oregon. To make a long story short . . . . . two women started the company several years ago ~ they were both flight attendants and didn't like the normal luggage and travel bags that you buy at the store and so they made their own bags ~ Then their co-workers asked them to make bags for them ~ THEN they quit their jobs and started BAGGALLINI ~ and they are both millionaires! GREAT SUCCESS!!!

You had a great day there!! Just curious though, did that big ring sound like silver or gold?

TO be honest, I'm not sure. I found it amoungst one of those pocket spills I mentioned. I was getting scattered and mixed signals all up and down the range from pull tabs on up, and back. I plucked half a dozen pennies, a couple of nickels and even a quarter out of an area about a foot or so... spread out, the Ring was one of those mixed signals.

Millionaires huh? If only that zipper pull was solid silver, or gold, or platinum even! <GRINNING>

Thank you... but you know, Like fishing... Even the worst day of metal detecting is better by far than the best day at work. <smile> Even if all I dig up are pull tabs and bottle caps I'm having fun.

If I'm THAT easy to please then you can imagine my excitement at digging up a silver coin, or a silver or even gold trinket! WOOOHOOO!

Wave the ring again under your coil and see if it is a high tone like silver or low like gold. Just a thought.

Well wouldn't you know it... it's mixed. My indicator is bouncing all over the place and I'm getting mixed tones. I thought all the mixed tones were from the pocket spill next to where I found the ring.
As for the ring, I've shown it to a jeweler and it is indeed "Vermiel" or gold plated silver wich leads me to a conundrum. Do I put this ring with my other gold finds? or with my other silver finds? <laughing>

Well that explains your mixed signals then doesn't it? Still it is a good find. Instead of putting in either of those, perhaps you need to start a third that is mixed like your ring is.

Good find none the less. :hello2:

With the economy the way it is, you might find more rings that are gold plated silver. It just stands to reason that a 3rd category would work. :icon_thumleft:

Hey Frodov ! Now if I understand this post( and all the replies) you scored a vermeil ring and
a solid gold ring - please get that gold one tested and report back to us it really looks good !
Blessings friend ! Argentium.

I'm sorry if I somehow confused you about the rings. Yes one was gold.... over silver, that would be the "vermeil" (or VurMAY) ring.. the bright shiny one with the stones (glass or QZ). The OTHER gold ring was as gold as you can get... from a gumball machine! No my friend, the only gold was on the silver. *sigh* Not that it wasn't fun finding both of them. But then again, I get excited when I stoop to dig up a pull tab signal... you just never know with a 100% certainty just what it is you are going to unearth. Gotta love this hobby!

You know, you're right... it's just that now I have to get another "bag" to put all the gold plated stuff I find into... right now that would be, well... this ring. <grin> HOPEFULLY there will be more joining it though!

The ??? and ???
refer to the hallmarks.

If you can read them clearly, you may be able to determine the manufacturer.

And, possibly, the year of production.

that token i think is a transit token im guessing that RTA is rural transit authority but thats just my guess

Well as I mentioned in my post, I needed a jewelers Loupe to be able to read the small marks (hallmarks). Unfortuneately, even with the loupe that I purchased for this and future finds, the marks are still blurry mostly due to the plating process I would assume. I still can't make heads or tails out of them, they are just too "soft" or blurred. Oh well. I'll survive. <grin>
