Silver hoard found in pre-revolution St Petersburg mansion in hidden room
Construction workers renovating a mansion in the centre of Russia’s historic capital St Petersburg have discovered a secret room containing silver and other precious items believed to belong to the Naryshkin dynasty, reported The St Petersburg Times.

The objects are wrapped in newspapers dated March, June and September 1917, the months before the October Bolshevik Revolution. They are said to be in excellent condition because they were wrapped in cloth soaked in vinegar that can still be smelled.

Silver fortune

The large dinner sets bear the crest of the Naryshkin dynasty, the family of Peter the Great who founded the city 300 years ago. Under Russian law the booty is now half the property of those who found it and half belongs to the decendants of the family.

Officials said they expected the long tradition of false claimants to royal ancestry to provide some potential owners. In practice the silver is likely to go on display in a local museum and finally the Trubetskoi-Naryshkin mansion on Ulitsa Chaikovskogo where it was found.

One can only assume that the owners fled the Russian revolution having hidden their wealth so carefully that nobody has ever known about it since. The family members who knew the secret probably perished in the internal upheavals in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution that led to the execution of many nobles.

This is the risk of stashing precious metals in secret places. Many investors in gold and silver eschew third parties like mints or exchange traded funds and insist on holding the physical metal. What happens if you die suddenly and your secret is untold?

When workers found the room, some of them decided to swap some items into vodka, but some of them were against swapping. They started to fight. It must be mentioned, these guys were immigrants from Middle East and police arrived soon. Then FSB (former KGB) arrived soon.

That's how it all ended. No treasure and no vodka.... Lol

Finding such kind of a treasure in RU is a real disaster.

So the treasure hopefully ended up with the authorities.

Update :The hoard found in the former Naryshkin Mansion in St. Petersburg last month has been moved to the Konstantin Palace at Strelna.Vladislav Kirilov, who heads the division to combat the theft of Cultural Property Research Affairs in St. Petersburg, has confirmed that the treasures were moved to the Konstantin Palace on Friday.
The treasure consisting of some 2,000 items packed into 40 boxes and bags were discovered while restoration work was being carried out on the mansion located on Tchaikovsky Street in St. Petersburg in March.
