Gold Panning location

Hi, our family is going out to california next year for my senior trip. I was wondering if there were any decent places to pan gold. Not the here's a map, go ahead, nor the tourist trap off ramp ones. Just someplace where they give you your supplies, point out the river, and let you go.

Up in northern Cal there's still plenty of gold being found... You can always get lucky!
Most is claimed up, so you'll need to go to a public place, or a pay to pan.
