It's been a while since I've posted. I finally got out today to do the hobby I love. It was a long day and I wasn't really digging anything cool. I decided to go back to one of my old hunts a piece a forest near an old church. My first did was the 1880 Indian head then the 1917 wheat penny. I was on my last few swings that I got I nice big hit. Absolutely amazing Elgin gold pocket watch. Obviously no dial and the front glass is gone. But I polished up beautiful. Thanks for looking. The pictures could be better. 1443997308315.webp

Very nice, I have only ever found one pocket watch, and it was nowhere near as nice as that, or gold for that matter

I would love to find that!! Nice job

Love me some pocket watches! I have one very similar to that in style but it is a Waltham, my grandfather was given it in 1925. The inside of the cover of mine says gold-filled.

awesome! Do you know if it's solid, or if it's filled/rolled gold? I found one a few years ago but unfortunately it was rolled gold. Had me fooled for a while.

I have no idea if it's solid gold or gold filled. Im afraid to take the back off because I've taken other backs off and not be able to get it back on.

Wow! Gold plated probably would have flaked at the edges so my bet is its solid.

Congratulations!

Steve

TONY FINE LOOKING POCKET WATCH FIND .

Great find Tony.
When I fiund my gold watch someone told me to push on the back. If its flexible it real gold if it is stiff its fake.. he was right. My was gold filled..

Beautiful watch. You wonder whether the cover is on the site somewhere. It would certainly be worth checking out.

You could bring it in to get the jeweller to unscrew the back or pop it open. If not corroded it should go back in place with no problem. Elgins really did some beautiful looking faces on the pocket watches as well the cases. It's a really nice find, congrats.

Tony , I'm of the opinion that your watch is Solid 14K at least ! If after you have it tested, it turns out to be so - I'm
going Banner all the way ! Solid gold pocket watches are found less frequently than gold coins which make Banner
almost all the time . Outstanding Find ! Please update us when you know !

Really nice gold watch find. I'm surprised there aren't any engravings in the shield on the back.
Definitely worth a trip to a jeweler for an opinion. He should be able to also tell you if that watch
even came with a face cover. Good hunt

Never saw a watch that nice!
Great find!

What year is the watch? If I remember correctly Elgin has a web site you can enter the serial number found under the back cover of the watch. The site will provide several pieces of information including date of manufacture.

Great watch... the back screws off and on... unscrew it and it will say14k, rolled gold, guaranteed for so many years not to wear through to the base metal....hope it's really gold!!
