Hello folks. Found my first gold sovereign. It is Queen Victoria 1842 in excellent condition .Can't believe it has been in the soil for so long and come out looking so good.
It was about 9 inches deep. I have searched the field for nearly 20 years on and off.It was ploughed up last time about 10 years ago.You never know in this amazing hobby what you could find next .
I had look on the net and it could be rare coin as appears to have mis strike on the last letter A of GRATIA. Any input would be welcomed .Thanks .

Yeah Baby ! Early Vickie Gold !!! BANNER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Argentium.

Sweet find, that's a beauty shiney! :icon_thumleft:

Could you post a picture of the letter in question? The entire Victoria series has many letters struck over other letters and other interesting things with the letters and on the whole it is fairly well cataloged by variety. I'm no expert on gold sovereigns so I couldn't help you on what exactly it is, but if you post a clear pic of that part of the legend surely someone will be able to identify the variety.

:icon_thumright: great find Mattdiver and welcome to the gold club. It does look like you do have an error coin there. Looks like an inverted V instead of an A.
My avitar has an error on it as well, if you look at the date there are only 3 numbers 185_ so you and I are in the rare gold coin club. I did see another sovereign, an Auzi one that had an inverted A for a V in Victoria and it was selling for $11,000.00 so congrats you have a special coin there. :blob7:

One more thing Matt, can you make out the mint mark?

That is nice! Excellent condition.

I had to vote Banner Beauty..... :headbang:

Wow you are off and running with a good start for this years detecting ! Nice going .
Yeah it is amazing how the Gold coins come out of the ground after a Hundred to a few thousand years and look as good as the day they were made . It does take your breath away does it not ?

Hope you find many more in that field and good luck !

I have submitted my vote for Banner, personally I don't know if all gold coins should be an autobanner thing but this is a rare coin with a minting error and deserves to be up there on the banner.
what would make it even more rare is a good mint mark, check out this site for minting marks.
