gold ring in water

A friend of mine said he lost his wedding ring a about 5 or 6 years ago in a swimming pond. The ring is in waist deep to belly deep water. I can hit silver and gold not even picking up the water lines at the house. I have never dowsed in water.Question is will the pond while you are standing in it throw you off your mark?Has any one tried while standing in waterThanks!!!Coop
