Of course any time Julian and I are hunting together, you know its a competition!
We started out at 7:00 this morning at the sidewalk tearout. They have been moving some dirt around and have opened up some new areas that we thought we should hit. My Only silver of the day came from this site and it was a 53 rosie. I also found my oldest coin of the day at this site. I got a good nickel signal at about 5in or so and proceded to dig my target when I noticed the soil was mostly clay. I then figured it was a jefferson nickel that just got moved around when the construction was going on because I have not dug to many coins that were in a hard clay before. Locating the nickel signal with the sunray, I noticed that it was protruding from the side of a piece of the clay. I walked my target over to julian and had him scan it with his detector to see how it sounded. We both wanted to believe nickel but the edge of the coin had a kinda green patina to it which made us start to think possible token or something. The suspense was killing us so we pulled it out and washed it off revealing an 1876 shield nickel. I just couldnt believe that a shield nickel got pulled from this site after all the good targets that it had already given up! I could have quit right then and went home happy but I dont think that julian would have let that happen. Soon we were off to the next site. It was the house renovation that I hit recently and found the silver ring and merc at. There was plenty of yard still to work and we made short work of it with julian digging the oldest coin at this site. After a quick lunch at the local sonic we headed out to the one room school house site to give it a good working over. There were some good finds at this site by julian but the only real keeper of mine was an 1887 indian that was pretty worn down. Leaving there our totals were neck to neck and we stopped at the local park to finish the day. With one last wheatie in my pouch I was finished and ready to head home.
