So i have a response to a craigslist ad to buy coins, and after negotiations I'm looking at 50 mixxed date morgons in ok condition for 19$ each, assuming they are real would you buy them? I'm think of re selling them on ebay. . I've sold morgans on ebay for like 32$ +shipping. on average, so after fees its like 28-29$ a morgan...
any thoughts?

His coins do look very similar to the fake coins on that website. If there are so many of these good quality fake/imitation Morgans around these days, I'd be real cautious buying Morgans just about anywhere these days that aren't slabbed by one of the top TPGC's or at least being sold by a very reputable seller. Maybe they will get around to figuring out how to make fake Morgans in fake slabbed NGC and PCGS holders sometime soon that look really legit too huh? (if they haven't already).

It says on that website: 100% of buyers enjoyed this product. Maybe some of those buyers enjoyed flipping them for a nice profit claiming they were the real thing.

That aliexpress site is bad- and huge- sales bigger than amazon and ebay combined- but ive seen several coins from that site that look, and measure up and pass almost every test there is- not good thats for sure

just keep stacking, just keep stacking, stacking stacking stacking

It says on that site that their advantage is they are a factory making a variety of fine quality world copy/replica coins for generations. Im sure that has been and will continue to be in the future a very costly disadvantage for generations of unsuspecting buyers of their fake "coins" on the secondary market.

ive heard of that too.... some are even using real serial numbers so they match with a actual coin that's similar, I may never buy a morgan again with fakes out there like this

this guy contacted me from my ad, ive tried texting him back, at the meet he said he had more, plus peace dollars, so I texted him the last couple days asking about the peace dollars, il try him from a different number today.. I am going to try to sell some of these as high quality fakes for educational purposes... about the only chance I have getting my money back, il try the PD and see if they would even pull the tapes from wendys, but I doubt it

on that website they have 1985 NMM ( which I think is the proof?) and very $$$$ made on real 90% silver!!!! bulk price was 60$.. you could make a huge profit of that, and if it is 90%, could you really tell? I thnk that site is were mine came from.

1889 CC Morgan Dollar 90% Silver Copy/High Imitation FREE SHIPPING-in Crafts from Home & Garden on Aliexpress.com

imitation... bet i can find one on ebay right now

who on here can say they see something on that coin that gives it away as a fake?? and by using the correct metal, weight and size will be right, and it will ping no doubt!.. we are screw, my real morgan is probably a fake

I wonder if a quality metal detector could tell the difference?

They do look pretty much the same as in that ad from China. The seller is likely long gone too. Expensive lesson that many have learned the hard way. I bought a large lot once from a Craig's List ad. It had a few fake Chinese coins but the seller said he thought they were fake. Those coins stuck to a magnet, the others didn't. I guess you never really know what you are getting when you buy coins that way.

im sure it could tell the ones i have ( i dont believe that are the 90% silver kind) but the ones they have for sale that are, i have no idea if you could tell them apart

Report his cell phone number to the police. You need to try to get your money back.

HOT OFF THE PRESS : FAKE

The pawn shop called me just now, and the Expert confirmed, counterfeit! not only that but he also had heard that a couple more were brought into a LCS a few towns over. ( my friend who was getting them checked out for me before i stopped by the pawn shop) so i wish they were this hot on the trail of who sold them to me!

Although im pretty sure everyone that has read this has figured that out on their own, including myself :( my wifes not happy, unfortunately this kind of washs my collection dump score from alittle while ago... i could sell all that AG and have the money i just lost.. I will hold on to alittle bit of hope that the justice/legal system will come thru and return my money.. im about as confident in that as i was about those morgans being real once i started seeing some of the better fakes out their....

thanks for your help guys, im pretty confident now that i couldnt be fooled again anyway... at least i know what you really need to look for.. i was very sure of myself buying those that if they wernt magnetic and weighed 26.7 g that everything was good..... costly mistake.

i plan on starting a new thread for ideas of what to do with them to recoup my costs, and not screw people... im going to try some pawn shops and see if i can sell them for educational purposes maybe? i feel like if i owned a LCS or pawn shop, and knew what a real morgan should look like, i wouldnt pay money for a fake anyway, but you never know, maybe they can put it up for display..

any other ideas??

you have a phone number.

Track him down.

The fakes are much better than the ones I've seen but if they're made of copper, they won't have that high pitched ding to them like REAL silver dollars do. I'm sorry for what happened to you but at least you have a phone number to report to the police.

Please let us know if you get your money back. I'm wishing you all the best.

i have a phone number but this isnt NCIS... you cant just track people down, and my experience with the police, is that they just take some notes, and do actual police work, but i do plan on filing a report, this all happened in a public place their should be cameras

Sorry to hear about the bad news confirmation but hopefully there's still a chance of you getting your money back from that guy. Maybe the more people he's been selling to the greater chance of him being caught. Make sure to at least contact the PD (if you haven't already) to let them know you're one of his victims so if they do catch the guy you will be in line to get your money back. So while there still might be a chance of you getting your money back, you'll want to keep the "coins" as evidence so I wouldn't try to get rid of them anytime soon. Good luck.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. It sucks big time, as I'm sure I don't need to tell you.
Just one more way that China is taking down America, one cut at a time, errrrrrrrrrr :BangHead::BangHead:
