Love the old 30-30. Lots of history. One of our first smokeless cartridges. 30 cal and 30 grains of smokeless powder. It was stuck smack in the middle of Marlin and Winchesters fight for market share in the late 1890's. Probably have to give the edge to the Winchester 94 on making it one of the world's most successful big game cartridges. Planning to pop me a doe this year using a pre 64 that was my Dad's first deer rifle. I was his request that it take another for old times sake. If you are fair with the range limitations, the 30-30 will do as good a job as the "Ultra Short Super Mag call Nasa before ya launch cartridge" that so many carry in the woods today. Especially on our smaller Whitetail here in the South East. CONGRATS on you hunt.
