Oldd coins? Found them next to an extradorinarly large tree in Maryland near a tributary close to the bay.

Why don't you try cleaning it up a little (warm soapy water) and see if that helps - post more pictures...

Actually, and I know it seems odd, but I think this is a roman bronze AE - possible Constantine I. Notice the cross on the found coin and the raised ring in the center which would be the wreath....

I see no attachment point or holes that would make it a button, it does look like a Bronze roman Coin.

Definitely not a button. I have an extensive button collection, 1000+. Pewter, wood, bone, ivory, brass, silver, gold, flat heads, two piece, one piece, I could go on and on. These are remarkably heavy for their size and have no distinguishing marks where there was once an attached shank or one piece shank. I'm going with roman coin similiar to deepsecrets post. I will take more pictures tonight and post

It doesn't look like any hammered coin I've seen...also in the pictures given, I do not see a bust.

Not offering these as proof the find is a Roman coin, but here are some interesting reads on Roman coins found in the US:

Note that roman coins have been found in the cast off ballast from 18thC English sailing ships - and this might account for such a coin ending up along the Chesapeake Bay.
