Is a pinpointer needed with this detector?

A pinpointer is helpful after you have dug your plug to locate the item in the hole or outside the hole. You could take handfuls of dirt and wave it over the coil, but a pointer makes life a lot easier.

Is a pinpointer needed with this detector?

No, it pin-points better than most detectors. However, a handheld pin-pointer sure makes things a lot easier when it comes recovering the target from the hole or plug regardless of which detector you use.
