Coin World has an article this week about how the Royal Canadian Mint has quietly been accumulating pre-2001 coins (in a partnership with Coinstar), melting them for their metal content and replacing them with new coins made of the post-2001 composition of steel plated with multiple, alternating layers of copper and nickel.
The practice, started in 2003, has been netting the RCM millions in profit from sales to metal dealers and may result in certain modern issues becoming rarities. The focus has mainly been the 5 cent to 50 cent denominations but it's safe to assume pennies are included.
Save those pre-2001 Canadians! They may show up less frequently in the near future.
