Hi all,

Mother nature gave eastern Missouri an incredibly gorgeous day today with temperatures in the 60's..the ground is still very soft here, and today's site yielded many targets worth checking into.

Last week, I called about a house up the road that was vacant (looked like a foreclosure) and the guy I talked with sounded really nice..he said he'd get back with me but never did. Since warm sunny days around here are numbered, I took a chance and called back..he gave the phone to another contractor who I met last year..he had given me a few leads last summer that got me some silver and tons of wheats from other yards in the area. What luck! I had just put new batteries in my Prizm yesterday so off I went to try my luck at this yard.

First I checked the front..I found lots of clad but not one old coin or relic except for an old buckle. Little did I know there was a ton of stuff in the back yard, including my first target (that rang out like a half dollar) which was a heavy sterling ring, #42 for me this year . Although it looks like it's seen its better days, it's nice and heavy :)

After that the back yard gave up an old pocketknife, a Tootsie Toy Jaguar, a key, a broken cap gun and more clad. One cool find ended up being a Marines pin that I believe is worn on the hat.

There were pennies everywhere but I dug them anyway. One of the penny signals turned out to be a key, and another turned out to be a Chuck E. Cheese token from 1992. I even had a zinc penny reading turn out to be a wheat penny ???.

I searched the front again and still not much there. Then I checked the back once more just to be sure..just inside the yard near some stepping stones I had missed a 3-wheat pocket spill

Anyway it was a fun hunt. No silver in coin form, but there was the silver ring. I may go back and search the yard again during the week if weather permits.

Here are some pics..I found 60 Lincoln memorial cents, 4 wheats, 2 nickels, 11 dimes and 4 quarters in change for a total of $2.84. The "Cohortibus Auxilia" pin was found in another yard yesterday..internet research says it's a pin from the Corps of Engineers.

That's a big 'ole piece of silver, Nat! 8) Super finds! Way to go!

Nana

That Eagle-Globe and Anchor is an officers pin. If it has two prongs on the back, about 1/4" long or places where they were attached it is a uniform pin, worn on the lapels of a uniform coat or jacket. If it has a screw post on the back, it would be attached in the middle of the globe and threaded, it is a hat emblem. The land surface on the globe, the anchor and the eagle was gold plated at one time. Good quality emblems like this are sterling, be sure and look for a sterling mark on it.

Enlisted emblems were shined brass or brass with brown enamel on them. They wouldn't come out of the ground that shiny.

Way to go Nat. That's some nice huntin' my friend. That old sterling ring is cool...and if it could only talk  I love finding odd stuff...but I don't seem to find much of it.
Take care buddy...and good luck on your next hunt.

I know you already knew what it was Natman!... just thought I'd share...

Thanks daytondigger! Boy don't I wish! Our neighborhood was developed in the late 50's..in all the yards I've searched (probably 20 or so), the only silver I've found have been Roosevelt dimes, Washington quarters, one war nickel and one Franklin half. I'll have to get to the older areas for the Mercs and Barbers.

Thanks for the info guys! Yes it has a threaded pin on the back side in the center of the globe. I'll check for any sterling markings.

Thanks Bryce, yeah I always wonder what kinds of stories our finds could tell.
Hope you're feeling better before the holidays roll around.

Nice digs Nat. Way to go on ring #42 and the Marine piece.
I haven't seen a ChuckE Cheese token here in a while. Yours is a 1992 and already 16 years old. I think ChuckE may have just been a small mouse way back then. :icon_scratch: :tongue3:
Congrats,
Doug

Thanks Doug, yeah I've been keeping track of time by the ages of my kids lately..my oldest was born in '93 so anything with 90's as dates let me know it's closing in on 2 decades..doesn't seem possible does it?

Thanks again you guys
