are you going to hunt salt, or fresh water? what price are you willing to pay? if you hunting fresh water are you going to be close to salt water beaches to hunt. you have minelab, the excalibur for both kind of hunting, if you never used one before, takes a little learning because of the tones, but its the one most like the best, fisher coming out with a new cz model soon, also the tiger shark, whites has some also.

I have a Fisher 1280 with a 10" coil, the detector is easy to use with just the on/off knob, sensitivity knob and a discrimination knob, no pinpoint. Would have gotten a Minelab Excal however, I will not use the water machine very much. Here's a quick tip for you while water detecting, work your foot into the area where the target is under the coil, then bring your scoop in beside your foot, move your foot and slide the scoop to where your foot was then dig. HH, Mike

It will all be freshwater and thanks for the tips...d2

If it is freshwater, the Tesoro Tigershark gets my vote. It is a great freshwater machine. Great on small gold.

d2,

What part of the country are you from? I do a lot of fresh water detecting so if you have any specific questions I would be glad to help. PM me if you like.

The Tesoro Tiger Shark is a fine fresh or saltwater detector. You also have the 1280 which SWR recommends as it is a simple one to operate and built like a tank. It runs under $700.00 new with the 10 inch coil, the size you should get. There are others with the Excalibur being the best in a lot of opinions, but it runs $1095.00. It can be had for less new. Water detectors cost more because they are waterproof.

Another option which is fine to use a land detector which can be hip mounted and you carry the controls on your neck while wading. This gives you a fine detector for use on land too, just can't fall down in the water.

I am to clumsy for the hip/neck mount deal. Aint no way I could keep it dry. Thanks for the info guys. I never wanted to do any swimmin' hole looking 'till I found a class ring and a small silver ring the other day. I think it will give me something to do when it gets to hot to relic hunt in the woods. I enjoyed my coin shootin trip the other day and I went back yesterday and found a 1955 dime at the waters edge and figure there will be more stuff out in the water than on the bank...d2

Tesoro TigerShark ;)

I have a surfmaster pro pi.
I use it in alot of fresh water springs.
great results, waterproof. good price
6 bills

I would rec remend the Excalibur 1000. It is what I use and it was very easy for me to learn. The other detector I have is a MXT and the excal is now my primary machine. All I have used it for is shallow water and beach hunting. The detector is heavy but you get use to it especially after swinging it in the water. If you get use to that you re fine. So I would step up to the minelab, its a good detector.
