Greetings. I'm new to this forum. Not new to roll and bag hunting though. Been doing it off and on since my dad and I did it in the late 1950's.

My question is this. I've frequently asked at banks about ordering or obtaining boxes of halves and the banks all give me a stupid look. Whom at the banks should I be asking? Am I using the wrong words? What am I doing wrong? Coach me here folks. I'd appreciate it.

I can get bags of unrolled halves, quarters, dimes all day long at some of my area banks, but I seem to be striking out on getting my hands on boxes.

Welcome to the forum ! Most of the CRH-ers here that I have been in touch with , will say
bags are preferable to boxes - if you are talking about halves . My experiences in the last
couple of years have been all over the place , I've been skunked on bags and then done very
well with them . I also have had boxes that were pretty hot (not dream boxes ) and i've
lately been skunked on lots of boxes. I've done well over the counter with "teller rolls",
and been completely skunked on them as well . I've developed a kind of stoicism that
has me feeling grateful if I get anything better than clad coins , no matter how many coins
I search . I firmly believe that if you persevere , you will find silver - stay in the game !
come heaven , hell, or high water , and you will find silver !!! Argentium.

The way I understand it it is not a menu type of selection when asking/ordering coin. The bank has the coin service through a company ie Brinks and the coin comes in sorted a certain way (example boxed) and goes out a certain way (example bagged). This is all according to the company. So if the service company gives the bank bags and the bank only gives you bags usually that is only what they deal with. Try a different bank.

They may give you odd looks because it's very out of the ordinary for an individual to order coin. Usually only businesses will place orders, and even that may not be common. Next time just ask for the head teller.

I've done very well over the years with bags and rolls myself. I see you've managed to get boxes - I presume halves. As I mentioned, or asked, what's the key to be able to get them. I used to live in Texas, Florida, Calif and now Oklahoma and never been able to get boxes of halves. I can get bags - no problem, always have been able. I don't believe it is a regional thing. It must be I'm not asking the correct person or not going about it correctly. I see Brinks trucks in front of banks frequently so I know who services banks in my area.

I just go in my Bank(s) and ask them to order me however many Boxes want, have never had them look at me like you described. So far have never had a Bank say they could not order them for me.

Look for a manager or, better yet, the vault manager (sometimes called a vault teller or merchant teller) and deal with them.
I have a business license, and have active business accounts with these banks, so it is far easier.

Bentfork, your best bet is to find a bank who seems eager for you to open an account. When they ask you if you would like to open an account say that yes, you are interested. I find this the best time to ask if they can order boxes of half dollars. Let them know you are interested in ordering at least 500- 1000 dollars worth. If they say sure then open an account. I find when they almost have you as a customer they will agree to anything. Good luck.

I often get that look too. It comes from tellers not knowing their own job.As i learned from this forum i am very polite and explain to them that whoever orders the coins will find the halves on the order form.Even so some banks only order coins for business customers.

I get those looks quite often but some times I get the eager teller who insists on ordering me a box since they dont have any loose halves. I most often let them. Most of the time its a bank I dont even have an account at.

Wow! I have never had a teller offer to order halves for me, not once! I have always had to talk myself into the deal.

This really might boil down to how long a teller has worked at a bank. My wife, who is a teller, tells me that it is not always common knowledge among the tellers that they can order coin for random customers. Most of the time there is only a single person responsible for ordering coin. If it were me, I would find vault manager/head teller and ask them.

I took some time this morning and stopped at the bank I do business with. The bank manager (she knows me by face) was very helpful in explaining why banks in my area don't and will not order boxes of halves. There might be some banks that do here, but in all likelihood they would be downtown - meaning downtown OK City. The reasons she gave was that businesses don't order them, the banks have enough trouble as it is with the fees associated with disposing of the coins they do get from customers - rolled or otherwise, and when banks locally order any coins it is only for what they need to do business. She was very familiar with roll hunting and assured me that anytime I wanted rolls of any coins they had to come and get them. I've been buying from them anyway for more than a year since I moved here. Truth or lies, that's the story I got. I offered to pay the fees - still no go.

Onward, I made my daily rounds and one of the banks I frequent had $290 in halves. Found 4 40% Kennedys. Also picked up $110 in dimes. Got 3 silver Rosies.

Later...
