black fox squirrels. I so much enjoyed these critters in my yard. One was quite friendly, you could walk up on him before he would scramble away. In the past years, there were 3...2 lived at my uncle's place & the other here. You could see them crossing the pastures visiting back & forth.

Louisiana Conservationist had a excellent write up about them and the author never seen one in person, I contacted him to come & visit. I understand they're only in the SE Louisiana area as what is known the Florida Parishes. I can not find that magazine at the moment and there is absolutely nothing on the internet that looks like the one pictured.

I don't know how long they live, & what became of the ones here, but they've not been seen since Katrina. The regular grey squirrels and the red fox squirrels are still abundant.

Those are cool critters!! :) I've heard of them but never seen one. At least you got some pictures before the dissapeared.

My husband mentioned black squirrrels to me once and I thought he was pulling my leg. Then about a week later I saw one on my way to work. Ours don't have the white face, they just look like a regular squirrel. They are real cute, sorry they are gone.

That chicory coffee you have down there is probably what turned 'em black.

Those are really special, I have heard of Fox Squirrels before but don't remember being black, that is so cool.

I have seen regular black squirrel populations at two places in the country, Great Falls, Montana and on the Air Base at Alpena, Michigan, have some somewhat lousy photos of the ones at Alpena.

I hope someday they return RR.....

Those are great shots RR...hadn't heard of these until you posted them. Thanks for sharing.

Once upon a time I read about black squirrels in a magazine article. There is a park somewhere that is famous for them. They are genetic freaks of nature just as much so as an albino. These are the first ones I have ever seen. Thanks for the pics. You made my day. M :D nty

There are black squirrels in the parks in Palo Alto, CA, but they don't have the white faces like these.

Never seen one before.
Cool :)
thanks!
