I found an old washout in a hill in town. I found a bottle from 1890-1896 there. It was a druggist bottle. Well I also found this item right under it. It feels like a solid graphite rod. The end is sharpened and has an angle like it was used for writing. On the other end there is a backwards L.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

It looks like the center part of an old battery.

Hello zaxfire,

I've dug similar shaped things, though less metalic looking, that I thought were semi-petrified lumber crayons.

Carbon rods have other uses - like in carbon arc lights. The letter could be cryllic (Russian)

In 1868 Leclanche introduced a battery with a carbon rod as the center positive pole. This battery was used widely for telegraphs and for other primary cells.

That is a carbon arch light rod from a street lamp.

A carbon arc lamp rod. Could be why the end is much darker. How in the world did you figure that one out? Wow. Thank you all for helping me. I'll go with that one.
