finally got out with a neighbor to a site of his. We had been planning to get together for a year or so and today finally worked out. Had intended to go to one of my sites but those plans fell through and we went to one of his sites.

Hunted for a few hours and found the back of a button, a wheatie and some other odds and ends. It was about time to go and while swinging on the way back to the truck dug this beautiful but badly worn 1773 Virginia Halfpenny and a nice tombac with some gold gilding.

Ecstatic about this coin, the only other large copper I have found is a badly worn large cent.

any suggestions for cleaning this to bring out more detail?

Thanks for looking and HH.

EDIT: added some more pictures after a short peroxide bath. Happy with the results, it brought out more detail on the Virginia State Seal. Can also see more of George's hair and can make out the S in Georgivs

Yes that will be good :icon_thumleft:

How do you get a 1773 virginia half penny out of that when you cannot tell at all what it is? You can't see a date! so how do you know it is a 1773 Half penny?

added some cleaned pictures, but I think thats as far as I am going to take it. I think I'll lose detail if I go any further.

however it did bring out the state seal nicely.

Thanks, I don't think I'm going to clean it any further. I think I'll just lose more detail.
