Great Hunt!

GREAT HUNT! I didn't strike gold but this first find is better in my opinion. Yesterday, I went to the Rocky River in Stanly Co., NC to a location where there was some strange rock structures stacked up along the bank. I think that is where a ferry crossing used to be. I started metal detecting there for my first time. The first hit I found this 1908-O silver quarter! It appears to be extremely fine or better. I walked out on a sand bar and found the canine tooth next. Maybe the "fossil guru" here can give me a better idea what it is. I picked up a few river smooth stones for my girlfriend also. I was amazed how rhyolite is such a natural occurring material in that part of NC. I decided to take a few samples before making my way out of there. Next, I went to an area where there is a clear cut in Cabarrus Co., east of Charlotte, NC. There was a lot more clear cut areas, but I only had time to search that one. I end up finding some artifacts. As you can see in the pictures most are broken. I picked up a few heartbreakers, some flake knives and scrapers made of quartz or rhyolite. The best point I found I took an insitu, I spotted that milky colored quartz from 5 yards away. That field I was searching was full of trash, glass, natural rhyolite and I found another marble, lol. Also, I had an unexpected visitor. A 4ft long black snake eased his way past me. I didn't mind him there, so I just kept hunting. It was great to make a few finds yesterday. Definitely worth the trip! WOOHOO!

Thanks. I had a little better than normal day. Most of the time, back where I'm from in the Yadkin Valley area of NC, I'm thrilled just to find one or two in a day. I'm thinking that quartz one is either a Savannah River or Stanley type. Then I found that Guilford base so I'm estimating the site I was on is probably Middle-Late Archaic. Well maybe older b/c I think I have a Paleo knife too (bottom row, far right).

There you go nice hunt. I am right outside the quart bearing area so the ones we find are rough with the exception of a few good quality. Good luck in all your hunts.

I'm going to get to go back there next Saturday. This time I'm going to pick up a few more samples of raw rhyolite. I might as well, since I'm the rockhead. I'm going to break up a few pieces to put in my rock tumbler also.

Thanks. I have collected coins for about 10 years and I never thought my first find with a detector would be this! It really does have eye appeal. This is the best Barber I've ever collected!

I'm glad I picked it up. I'm not sure if I'm wanting to keep it natural or drill a small hole in it. Maybe I will make a necklace with it.....

Nice Finds! The tooth is not too old, and that quartz point is not a bad find. But that silver quarter is a dandy of a find.

You would be really surprised to see how many acres have been clear-cut. There's more lots down that highway from there too. That area is opening for new housing developments, golf courses or large businesses. My friend, Brian, said he has a friend that went to Chesterfield Co., SC and came back with over 150 arrowheads in one day. It seems like these areas are located on the country outskirts of Charlotte. I like using Google Earth too but it doesn't have the most up-to-date imagery to see these clear-cut lots.

Thanks for the replies yall! I have some more exceptional types in my collection. Native American artifacts is just part of what I collect. I enjoy collecting rocks, gems and minerals altogether. However, I do consider lithic materials to be my most favorite. I know there is many people from other states on this forum. NC does have a rich Native American history, The Lost Colony, the first gold discovery, amazing parks, beautiful landscapes from seashores to mountain peaks and more. If anyone is interested in traveling to the Carolinas or want to read more about NC, there is a book I suggest. It is called "Exploring the Geology of the Carolinas." It is basically like a field guide, describes a few important landscapes here and it teaches anyone interested in geology also how each originated. For example, if anyone has watched the movie "The Last of the Mohicans," the waterfalls part was filmed in the DuPont State Forest. The book also describes places, such as Reed's Gold Mine, Pilot Mtn., Grandfather Mtn., Morrow Mtn., and Jockey's Ridge (there's more too.) I just scraped the surface of what all the adventures you can have here. Overall, if anyone has any vacation ideas, I suggest a trip to NC.

Also, talking about treasure hunting, Dollar General is freaking awesome! One time I got a Washington silver quarter in my change. Another time I found a $20 bill laying on the floor. Then, yesterday I found someone's brand new, folding Buck knife laying in the aisle. I wonder what Dollar General has in store for my next venture!?
