Strange Indians led him there. I did not know they used or had magnets. Maybe just the shape is what attracted them.
Old Indian legend has it that the great wonder stone cannot be missed with iron tipped arrows…

Just a theory I'm chewing on...

If the top of that big iron rock was struck by lightning, the current
traveling through the rock would polarize the electrons, thereby
creating a giant magnet.

 

also notice the article says 42 foot.
it's hard to measure a Picture but I'm guessing less then 20 feet now
