Just a theory I'm chewing on...

If the top of that big iron rock was struck by lightning, the current
traveling through the rock would polarize the electrons, thereby
creating a giant magnet.

also notice the article says 42 foot.
it's hard to measure a Picture but I'm guessing less then 20 feet now
