Working an abandoned gas station that shut down in the 60's as interstates pushed traffic off Route 66. I plan on hitting it over the weekend and have pulled 8 silver coins since yesterday, along with a dozen toasted wheaties and about a ton of scrap metal pieces. The station apparently had a mostly gravel lot, and it took a toll on the coins I found there versus in the grassy sides. I got two war nickels, both '42s, one a P and one a S, but they had dramatically different experiences as one was in the lot and one under grass:

I found a Barber dime, which is worn so smooth I couldn't tell from the front what it was. I tried to clean it to get to a date, but there's just not much left:

And four Mercs, all in the gravel. I'm thinking they are all Mercs... they got beat pretty badly:

And finally, a silver Rosie that got hit hard by something:

Most of it is in pretty rough shape, but I'll dig sloppy silver all day long! Thanks for looking and sharing the experience with me.

Also - I'm curious what you do with your "junk silver" - the coins that aren't worth any collectible value because of the condition, but still have the material and historical value. I keep mine in a wooden box "treasure chest" I picked up at a garage sale. Kind of nice to run my hand through the coins -- bad pirate habit I suspect!

Anybody have anything they do? Maybe catalog the site and put the coins into sleeves or something? Looking for ideas - thanks!

Whats up javadroid, I was wondering what you've been up to lately? ?? Nice work wish I could get silver like that. Congrats !!

Hey Bart - good to hear from you. I've been off a bit with a new job and have gotten back into the swing of things with Spring coming. Hope all's well and recovered from the storm for you. I'll be back and active going forward. Thanks for checking in!

Silver is always nice and you got some. Congrats.

Very nice collection of silver finds! :occasion14:

I like the treasure chest full of junk silver!

looked like a pretty rough neighborhood for the silvers! congrats anyways, they are still silver and still great finds. sometimes it is what it is. I wouldn't turn any of them down

Nice haul. Too bad they took a beating like that. When I get tired of having the beat up stuff around I sell it to a local dealer who pays 90% of the melt price, but your treasure chest sounds like fun.

Keep swingin.
