I do not want to traumatize the home owner. I want my plug cuts to be as clean as possible. Be also need to be productive. What shovel do you have?
I would suggest not using a shovel to begin with.
Use a Lesche hand digger.
If out back in the field, or bush then a shovel is ok.

I use a five dollar gardening trowel from lowes
It’s stainless with a serrated edge
I’ve used it for years
