Greenville,SC newb with a few questions

My nephew and I want to try to get started panning for gold in the upstate of South Carolina. We have watched a ton of videos. Is there any place that we could go to do a test pan somewhere to see how gold acts in a pan in real life? I remember seeing places like that when I was a kid and traveled with my family. And second, any advice for newbs that you are willing to share?
