Hello from Marion County, IL. I hope I'm doing this right. I've found a few not so old coins along with several marbles on my property. (I have a very old, little, metal detector). Recently I read of a cave here in Marion County, IL (I was surprised to think any cave might exist in this region. We do have some old, closed mines though.). Anyway, this cave is located in the South-East corner of the County. In the mid- to late 1920's Orville Lowery and his daughter were moving rocks to prepare a garden; and they found an entrance.... Supposedly there were relics that they discovered. I guess they sold some. Many years later a relative of Orville's wife *as near as I can tell, Russell Burrows, acquired land in that same area (maybe the same land). In 1982 he found an entrance to a cave in the side of a cliff. (I was away at college and did not learn of his find then). As I've read a hodge-podge of things on the internet about the cave and relics Mr. Burrows was said to have found it seems that many people are quite sure that his finds are mostly just a rather elaborate hoax. And I also read that some items may have gotten there by way of a woman who worked at and stole from a museum in IN (no idea - but an interesting hypothesis).
I've enjoyed documentaries about treasure hunters raising ship-wreck relics from the likes of The Atocha. Then there was a cool Readers' Digest article several years ago about guys figuring out where a sunken boat was buried in a farmer's field (either MO or KS) due to the river having changed its' course since pioneer days.
Perhaps I can learn more from some of you.
