Hello! I'm new to the metal detecting hobby, so new that as I'm sitting here at work my first metal detector is waiting for me to be picked up today! I have been reading up on everything that I could find for a little while now and decided to purchase a used Excalibur II (with an Anderson straight shaft) which from what I have read has quite a learning curve, the more reason I liked it. I live in Miami so I would mainly be detecting on the beach but would like to also try and use it on other dry sites, not sure how well it would go but I heard that it should be ok. Around where I live even inland has a sandy dirt, it's not like other states were you actually have real dirt. Any tips are welcomed with open arms!

Welcome to tnet !

Hello and welcome to the forum...

Get yourself a pinpointer, and when hunting dry land here in S FL, there really is no such thing as plugs,, use a diggy tool to slice the turf, pin point the target, then reach in and pull out your target. Use a small towel to pile sand on if you feel its necessary, easy to fill the hole in without making a mess.... Your best hunting will be on weedy, thin Bahia grass.. the thicker floratam grows up on itself, and you will find that targets may be out of reach. Sometimes I get permissions site unseen, and when I get there, the Floratam is 8 inches or more above the sidewalk and walkway...never a good sign. Good luck dude.

Welcome to the forum. The Anderson shafts really makes a big difference with many detectors. Happy Hunting in 2015.

Welcome from Minnesota, though I'm dreaming of Florida. Put in a lot of hours with your Excal. I believe the water machines have a quicker learning curve then the land machines. Now, go find some Gold - GOOD LUCK!!!

Thank you for the tips, they will come in handy. I've had my eye out on the Pro Pointer AT for a few days now so I'll most likely go with that.

I also want to thank everyone else for the warm welcome!
