relatively dense and heavy; doesn't feel like it would shatter or splinter off getting thrown at most anything.

My opinion, I think it's natural. No pecking and grinding from human hands that I can tell. The grooves are where softer material eroded away via water erosion. I also don't see any wear from battering. However, it could definitely be used as is.
 

Sorry, natural erosion, I blew pictures up 10x and I see no signs of pecking or grinding.
