So I go to the branch of my credit union to ask about ordering halves, the manager at this location offered to order halves in the past when
I asked to buy halves off their machine so I thought it would be a smooth encounter. I also maintain our primary savings at this credit union.

The following exchange occurred:

Manager: Why do you want to order halves?

Me: (thinking: None of your fing business) I am a collector, I like to go through them.

Manager: You know, what you collectors dont understand is that it costs us money when we have to ship the coins back when you bring them back to us.

Me: (thinking: wont cost as much as when I close my accounts...) I wont bring them back to you.

Manager: Then where are you going to take them?

Me (thinking: none of your business....again) A large national bank.

Manager: Oh, they will not take them.

Me: (thinking: Now I know you are an idiot) Yes they will, dont worry about that.

Manager: Well, this is a highly unusual request, but I will look into it. We would have to order them from the Fed.

Me: OK, please keep me informed.

SHEESH! I have not ever been treated this rudely by a manager, especially considering the large balance I keep there. Anyone else run into the third degree? She treated me like what I was asking for is illegal lol.

that's why they hire women to be managers :laughing7:
at least the type of woman who thinks
she owns the place.

Simple solution...move on to another supply bank. Remember to keep things into perspective.

No reason to get upset at somebody whose is trying to earn an days wages, when your out for the fun of it. Who knows what type of other customer has just walked out the door before you walked in.

They are not my regular supply bank lol. The thing is this very same manager offered to order halves for me in the past. I just cant understand why she would treat me like that with a large balance still in savings...im not some ahole with a minimal balance trying to take advantage.

The possibility of getting a box direct from the fed has me intrigued, so I will take the grilling for now. I was just curious if anyone else has been treated like this by a bank where they maintain a large standing balance.

It this situation the best thing to ask," has anyone else order halves and then brought them back?
You can then reassure him that you won't (as you did) and depending on you dump situation, you could offer to buy the halves from the bank and dump them somewhere else for him.
If it is a once in awhile issue it may be worth it to cement a relationship.

That's what I would have brought up. After the "what you collectors don't understand is...", remind her that she offered to order them for you previously, and ask what changed.

Also a thing to understand, they don't order coin from the "Fed". Shows how much some of these folks understand the ordering system. They will come from the same supplier that they order their other coin from.

I'm sorry. I guess I've been doing this long enough, seen the same complaints, I'm just trying to remind people that it is a hobby and nothing to get worked up about.

I, myself had one of my supply banks get "goofy" on me this week. The assistant BM asked if it would be easier for me to just order my coins once per month. This is after forgetting my order 3 out the last 5 times. My response was no thankss, I'll do my banking elsewhere. Thank you for you service in the past.

So my coin flow slows for a week, new banks are ready to deliver next week.

Credit union aren't generally good for ordering a lot of coins. Especially if they are small and not a merchant bank. Probably better to stick to bigger banks. I can see them doing it for you one time or maybe a couple times but in the end, they'll get tired of it. They do pay more in fees because they don't deal with coins too often as larger merchant banks. I haven't ordered from credit unions but this has happened to me when I tried to order from smaller banks of large chains. They seem to get annoyed with it.

I try to be so nice it hirts. Most of them are so nice. Even my dump banks are very nice. Even this week with the large amount of boxes ?? 56 boxes You never know if it works out or not. I have 3 banks that will not get them any more. Theres 100 more!!!So just smile smile smile... Then ask again in 2 weeks. Good luck Tim Zim :) :) :) :) :)

This is exactly what I do. I am all smiles to them despite what I am thinking lol.

So she gets back to me and says they "are not willing to provide this service to me." LOL. Well, I am not willing to provide my money to them any longer.

I plan to take the bankroll and open 3-4 more accounts with other banks who are willing to order halves. There are two other large nationals in the area plus one regional that I think will order halves. Onward! ;D

Where do you think the supplier gets them from?

The local federal reserve branch. If the supplier has some in the vault sure they will use those but I assure you the vast majority comes from the fed. This is why the bank pays a supplier to do the running around.

The supplier (Brinks, Garda, Loomis) is technically the Fed.

Most of the suppliers get the coin they deliver from other coin they pick up at banks. Just like ordering coin, the banks can only hold a certain amount then they send them back to the supplier. Supplier picks up halves, rolls them, then delivers as new orders. Sure they may have to order from the fed once in a while, but they generally roll what customers turn in. How do you think you get your own dumps?

On this one I dont think at all. Maybe its different in different parts of the country, but around here the coins go through the feds vault darned often. Occasionally I would see the same marked coins in a year but how in the world did I get so many silver coins when I KNOW of dozens of guys around me who order massive quantities of halves a week. How are silver coins slipping by the guys that hit 40 banks a day 4 days a week on road trips? Like you said the bank has to have large amounts to even ship them in the first place. These banks arent going to keep silver halves around with all the road trippers in my area. Yet we always find silver.

I dont think we disagree on where the coins come from. Just the percentage. Goodluck in your hunting.

Enamel7 is right. They very rarely will come from the fed. That is why those who go through 50 boxes a week will be shocked when the well runs dry and they just keep getting their dumps back!!! SUPPLY and DEMAND......simple :dontknow: :dontknow:

You forget that people continuously dump silver back into the supply in the form of CWRs, bags from machines, etc. The well never really runs dry, probably wont for another 5-10 years.

The well will be dry if silver is $150/oz. and there's a ton of news articles on it. The more people know about it and notice, the more keepers don't make it to those boxes.
