Hey all. Dug this barrel in a glass dump a few months ago, soaked it in ACV for a bit and now I'm curious as to what sort of rifle it was.

It has an octagon shape, it's about 27.25" long overall with the barrel itself being 24" long. There is too much concretion for me to determine inner barrel diameter but the outer diameter is 0.76" wide.

I may have also found a part of the action but it's still too rusty to say for sure. TIA

Might be easier for you to do research if you can get exact length because some barrels are 5/8ths and such just for example. Is it octagon all the way through or only where the stock would be?
Cool find, I'd be excited to find that!

Outstanding. That's a bucket list item for me; to find and clean a firearm. Good luck with the cleaning.

Thanks, it was on my bucket list too. It's a pity I didn't find it with my MD, but a find is a find.

It is octagon from end to end.

Nice find, It looks to be an early breech loader, if you can get the shmutz out of the breech end and get a measurement inside, and a decent measurement of the muzzle diameter we might be able to figure it out...

.22 bolt action is my guess. Cool find.

I have no idea what kind of rifle it was but it looks like it has a lock and the octagon barrel is probably super old. A Black powder rifle I was thinking maybe from the 1700's or thereabouts?

I'll try, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

.22 bolt action is my guess. Cool find.

It does look to me like a small caliber, whatever it is.

You need to put that in electrolysis.

I want to, but I'm having trouble finding a piece of sheet metal to use as the cathode.

Tedyoh thinks .22, did they ever make black powder .22 muskets?
